This "accident" caused some bad words. No idea why it fell to bits after the citric acid bath, but it did. The cracks were clean and sharp.

I was given some Arc Rods suitable to fix this, but my welding skills with cast iron is not the best. But I have done it.
But I thought I should enlist help, so armed with doughnuts and the rods I set out.




One repair failed, but it was repaired and more advice taken
Plus the rods only cost me more doughnuts.

Good idea but I will keep the machine as close to original as possible, plus the shrink rate off alloy will be to much.

Sketch it in Fusion 360 adding the percentage of expansion difference then 3 D print it in plastic and lost wax /plastic cast it . If it's too big to print in one go do it in thirds or quarters and glue them together before making the mould up for casting

Dip in molten wax until it builds up the extra thickness needed to allow for shrinkage?
Never done it - but was recommended to do so in the past.

Made an anvil stand. Might still do some work on it. Loops or something to hang tools from. Perhaps add something to the base to make it more stable, though it feels very stable as is.

Best pal phoned on Wed evening to say he was coming to visit on Thursday, for 2 reasons

a) as a test to see how he and his dog could settle for a few nights in the Nissan van which he has very skillfully converted into a 'caravanette'

b) foe a welding job he wanted me to do for him. Wouldn't reveal what it actually was but asked "Have you any 3mm metal. "Sheet or bar", I asked, "thickest sheet I have atm is 2mm". but bar, aye any amount for anything you'll be wanting."

I told him I'd be going to Tain on the Thursday morning, firstly to meet up with @Migmac [good catch-up] then a flying visit to Asda & Lidl on the walk back home, but that I'd try to get back before he arrived. "Won't matter" says he "I've got keys to your house". Which he has had for years, but I'd forgotten for the moment...

Anyway, his 'job' turned out thus, he had wanted to make the passenger into a Captain's Chair, this would free up space inside the van when he was off on his own on a fishing trip, and not carrying a passenger as he sometimes does.

He had a turntable which was designed to the driver's seat but we set to altering it to fit the other seat. We started with this



progressed through to this after much cutting, drilling, welding, grinding + a bit of paint to this...



Hence to this





With the h/rest removed it'd recline another six inches if extended completely [this ^^ could recline further]

And fitted in this





The graphics were arranged by his son, a fitting gift as my pal's mad keen of loch fishing - trout etc.
If he's happy with what we achieved, I'm very happy for him.

He's stopping here until Monday, having declared the visit a great success on both 'hoped for' outcomes.

But a lazy[ish] day tomorrow, I've told him he's going to help me properly tension the drive belt on the Meddings [you need three hands to do it properly...well I will ]. initially I thought the keyless chuck wasn't holding the drills properly as they would sometimes jam just before breakthrough. It'll be top cover off/slacken 2 x bolts at the motor slides/ get friend to lever the motor plate back to increase to proper belt tension/ and most importantly hold it there until I retighten bolts. Run up drill to check tension and if good refit top cover again.

Also refit the guard holder of which I broke a section using wedges to replace chuck. Yesterday I took the angry grinder to it and having done so, confirmed belt problem. So it'll be getting tidied up and refitted - currently drill looks like this in its 'naked form', means I can now get a good grip on the upper part and tighten the chuck with a ER32 C- spanner

As long as its secure, it's fine... Unless he has an accident and that modified seat caused or escalated the problem. As long as the welding is good, then no problem

One dead wooden spoke shave was converted from dead to alive.

The wooden frame was consumed by fire, best way to deal with active worm.



The blade was cleaned up, but the cutting edge was removed, more about that soon.
The blade tangs were extended by silver soldering on extensions from off cuts.



No, that idea was not a good one, so I redone it with some decent round stock. The end ground to match the tang.



Fitted to new handles using sulphur.



The old spoke shave was turned into a Draw Scraper, think draw knife design.

Top of the picture you can see the old dirty wood surface, at the bottom after 2 pass with the blade.



This is the course scrapings. By tuning the burr and the handle you can get it smooth. Like you have used sand paper.

I have the same van as your pal, the interior is still very much a work in progress and I'm always looking for ideas and inspiration so I'd love to see what he's done to his if he wouldn't mind.

I modified my front seat to the extreme by removing it completely and fitting a piece of 18mm MDF to the base, which still leaves me the original storage underneath but also gives me somewhere to strap the fridge to while travelling:




Made an extension last week for the bunk as well. It's the perfect length for me at 6' but wasn't really wide enough, hence the fold-out extension:







Still very basic as yet, but OH has just accepted an offer on her Mum's house (for a lot more than she anticipated) and says if it all goes through okay she'll buy me a bigger van . However, I do love this little van. It does 50 mpg, it's comfortable, and I know every nut and bolt on it, so the plan is to see if I can live in it while I'm away, and take it from there. My thoughts are that a roof rack might be all I need for extra storage, then some more creature comforts inside. I bought a roof box last year, but I haven't tried it yet, I fear it will p,ay havoc with the fuel consumption...

Should be passing by your abode next Saturday, all being well, so will call in if that's okay. And while I won't officially be taking orders for scallops, there may be some that inadvertently swim into my goodie bag while I'm diving .
