As soon as the glass was smashed with a handy office chair, the window could be used as an exit. The fire brigade often rescue victims through upper floor windows. Hard for them to do that with the bars in place.

Yes a window smashed with anything will make an escape route.
With bars on, no.

Yes the fire brigade will rescue from the upper floors, but rather not.

They like to count the people at the muster point. Then put out a fire.

I would like to see at least 2 x 3 hour Emergency lights fitted. Plus a Exit box over the door(s).

It is the sites duty of care to do all that.

All you have to do is make sure the things like paint are safe to use.

Eg it was brought in good faith from outlet and complies to the BS/Eu regulations.

I’m lost. This is a private residence, there’s no fire extinguishers or exit lights. It’s a tack room attached to a set of stables all made of wood. The only thing at risk in that tack room is the saddles

"Made" is a bit of strong word, but today my dining table / work-from-home desk got a very nice upgrade.

From a nasty 20-year old Ikea veneered cardboard thing, 1200 mm × 600 mm and far too low for me able to get my chair at a good height for my back to feel comfortable:

To an off-the-shelf motorised frame and a piece of 40 mm thick oak worktop that I cut up, routed the edges and treated with a Tung Oil based mix (the photo really doesn't do justice to how gorgeous this lump of oak looks):

The new desk is 1600 mm × 880 mm, so much, much bigger (and heavier!) than the old one and I can switch from a sitting desk (at a comfortable, for a lanky so-and-so like me, 790 mm height) to standing desk at a touch of a button. It'll also be nicer as a dining table than the horrible old Ikea one (although once I'm established again, it'll take me a while to get all the work clutter off it before we can actually eat at it).

Should make working from home a bit less unpleasant as it seems like I'll be doing it for a lot longer.

Now I've got the rest of the worktop (cut into a 1400 mm × 720 mm piece) to treat in the same way (which will take a week with all the coats of oil) before it becomes my better half's desk upstairs. Oh, and I've got to move all the clutter back onto my desk so we can use the lounge again!

This came my way the other day.



I will confess The price tempted me to get it for spares, as I could not see all the contents at the time of handing over the 3 coins.


But getting it home I found it was fully complete, even down to the small can of "Meths." Even the jet cleaner was sharp.

But did it work.




Oh yes, a nice gentle flame and a nice noise.

But rust had taken hold in one corner.





So a lump of copper was heated up and a bit of brass was soldered on.





So a coat of paint, a polish and a test burn.

What motorised frame did you go for? Keep thinking about converting my desk, considering the amount of time I spend at it!

Good afternoon gents. My progress on the new punt.

All seams welded out, keel capping completed and doubler plates welded in. Some dressing is still required but ready to be turned over. The keel capping and the doubler plates need to be dressed and she's good to go. Will be turning her over on Monday for the bulk of the welding to happen. Gone through a roll of 5356 so far and there is much more to do.

Is there any rule of thumb in gang-planing concerning if the pieces are better in series like you show or in parallel (side-by-side)?

In machining, as in life, do a few long strokes give a better finish to many short ones?

Nice work but every punt I have seen is “punted” by a pole, even the other lot in Oxford that punt from the wrong end . Is that one going to be poled ?

@Brad93's already put this to bed by clarifying the situation, but the window is designed to slide open right ≥ left - it's jammed shut using a length of wood.

thats a nice read more so when you get to the first planner was made of

to set up in a straight line is easier than the other
whilst planning both at the same time does less runs with less wear on the bed of the machine
also a machinist wouldnt have to be there could let the machine do both at same time instead of stopping it, traveling it over to the other piece then planning that one
