It is not helping much with the freezing, whether night time or day time 
It is mainly to stop the steel slats rusting which would happen if just pure water.
You get the right stuff for it, but it would cost me over £300 so I have opted to try some Rocol V-Cut SS in the water instead.
As said it is not helping much with it freezing as it has been frozen for the past week, well until I start cutting, then it soon melts. It is certainly stopping any rust and so far I don't detect any fumes coming from it.

Today I have made this
I am helping a friend retrofit his lathe with an SZGH control. He has a problem, the servo drives he has can only output simulated encoder signals when the drive is set up for analogue command. He needs them in Step/Dir command and when in that mode it uses the same connections as the encoder output would be and thus they are not available.
Not too much of a problem regarding the actual encoder pulses but for accurate homing he really needs an Index signal. He has managed to fit an encoder onto the X axis which is the most important axis with regards consistent and accurate homing. The turret wouldn't have been too bad but the Z axis was going to be more problematic due to the space. Also quite expensive having to buy two encoders.
I wondered if fitting a prox switch would work but when I read the manual I saw that the Index inputs on the control were 5v differential so I thought I could maybe use a line driver and convert the signal from the 24v prox to 5v differential, it seems to work
Oh also should mention, the control can be set up to home to switches only or home to switch then Index, problem is you can not select for each axis, the selection is for all axes. Because the X axis really requires accuracy then that is the option we want but because of that Index signals are also required on the Turret (set as C axis) and the Z axis.

I put the last coat of osmo polyx wax/oil on the small table for the brewery. So far it owes me about 20 quid in resin, the rest is scrap or reclaimed. I could probably get that down to a tenner if I bought in bulk but I have no intentions of making more on a regular basis.
I like the idea of using the resin for stabilising cracks in wood you would otherwise burn, also stops the cracks getting full of crud, but river tables are a bit of a fad that will pass, a bit like Artex This was a bit of fun and the kids enjoyed helping.
You can still see the car tyres, rusty oil drums and builders rubble so I got the tinting about right.
You may think the colour is a bit strong, but there used to be loads of dye works at this end of the calder valley when the cloth industry was in full swing and the river changed colour on a regular basis so maybe not.
The legs are reclaimed from an old IKEA wheeled desk that wobbled like Bambi on ice. I cut them down so the table is about 18" tall, ideal for beer glasses in the brewery tap.
It will be dry by tomorrow so will give a test with a couple of pints while I plan the next brew.

I quite enjoyed making this, shame it didn't work! 38mm hex, two 5mm holes for pins to dismantle an inner steering rack tie rod for re-shimming the play. A washer and nut hold it in place, another special tool should be used to hold the body but as it has three 1/4" slots I held it lightly in the lathe 3 jaw. It flexed my shiny new Snap On 24" breaker bar then sheared the pins.
When I make tooling like this I use the rollers from roller bearings, you can actually buy them from simply bearings loose and I always have a selection of sizes in stock.
