Mixed day today.
First up was mill an RSS number plate.

Then welded a couple of 3mm studs to the switch panels I made a while ago, did 2 of them.

Then a repair on a Chinese stainless helm wheel, the spokes had come loose and the wheel was walloping about so a quick tak on eack spoke cured it.

Then a couple of hauler knife wear plates.
Forgot to take a pic of it before I started but here it is with the first weld, as can be seen it is nearly worn through..

All filled up.

Then ground to shape.

Then rinsed and repeated on a second one.

Decided to go out to the plasma table and make a loader slide out of some alu angle and a couple of the knackered trucks. It seems like it will work, I should be able to slide the front edge of a sheet onto it and then push from the opposite end of the sheet and slide it onto the table.

I was only trying to cut at 2-3mm depth and had cleaned the chuck surface [Acetone]. I'll have another go tomorrow, other 'stuff' permitting, and try a different cutter and experiment with spindle speed [I wasn't feeding fast]. The chuck def holds lumps of metal [V-block etc] to the extent that you can't lift them off...... It's a mystery #scratching head

Not much done today. I added a 5mm plain oak border to the board, I decided it looked daft if it was the same wood as the squares on the chess board. I then started to look at the boards I had for the 100mm border. They had some nice burr, but lots of boring bits, like the board below, nice bits on the right, but not much character on the left.

So rather than cut up big boards just for a bit of burr, I decided to saw up all the small bits of tree I had left and salvage what I could. Here's a bit getting the chop before going through the bandsaw and planer.

Here's some of the bits I ended up with, I have some more scabby bits lurking in the barn so I think I may just about have enough.

I can't cut them thinner to go further, the back of some of them is nearly back to bark. Here's a piece with a reasonable bit of burr.

but the back looks like this and its only 20mm thick.

But cut down to size and glued with polyurethane glue that foams up and fills the voids, its fine. Here's a trial fit of a couple of bits. It may be a patchwork of bits but it gets rid of all the odds and sods of oak I have and makes a bit of room and I think it will look fine once polished up.

I've just about run out of poly glue and time so I glued the right hand corner on and the last bit of oak edging and clamped it up for the night. If I left it overnight it would probably move a little and need cutting again, but once glued to the ply base and chess board it should be fine.

2-3mm DOC might be a bit ambitious and also the cutter looks like it may be meant for aluminium, not that that should matter too much.
You could try blocking the work piece in with larger bits of steel at the edges. BTW is it definitely steel and not some kind of ferritic stainless?

Aye, wondered if I was a bit ambitious . Scrap bit I'm pretty sure is ordinary steel & not stainless of any kind - I seem to recall drilling & tapping it for practise ages ago. Might try bigger 'blocks', but if I wanted to mill off the edge I'd be snookered?

I'll try tomorrow if I get a chance with a different cutter with more flutes and def sharp [i.e. new]

How smooth and flat is the underside of the piece you are holding? Generally V-blocks, etc. will be ground, so very smooth and flat. If the 6mm stuff has burrs or is only touching at one or two places, the adhesion will be poor.

Pretty sure it's flat but will check tomorrow. 'Blocking' bit was def smooth.

Started on the rear enclosure bit for power supply. Plan to put steel mesh on the top. If it feel warmer tomorrow I might get the tig out to glue the bottom sheet on.
Not decided on the output connectors, XT60's might do it.

It will power an induction heater board, plan to test that tomorrow, but its mostly an excuse to mess about with esp32's to control it.

Made a fence for a table saw we were donated up at the railways woodwork shop, the saw is a shceppach and has a cam lock flap thing that locks the fence, a bit of small angle i had was a perfect fit so that coupled with a bit of box section and some 3.5mm sheet for bracing did the job.

I'd be worried with the overhang if you're holding it by the small diameter. there can be a lot of force when using a slitting saw on steel.

Cheers for that, it is for Delrin and Brass so should be ok. The small diameter is .511" or 13mm to suit my ER20 collet chuck (max size on that). If I need to do a heavy job I can always make another one.

should be ok then, I use a an er20 collet chuck for holding my slitting saws, but dont think Ive used one wider that 1/32"

It's a 3/32 thick one to cut the teeth into a Delrin following gear on a 6tpi Acme lead screw. If it works, I will be making a Brass one. If it doesn't then we will talk no more about it
