ive been making a heavy duty can crusher bit by bit all week.
today ive been making the handle.
its got a linkage to a crusher plate so hopefully ups the pressure applied by the handle by quite a lot.
my last one does beer cans really well but struggles with bean tins and the like as theyre thicker.

True...with the proviso that prices will only keep rising as long as people are able to borrow money at an affordable rate....I'm old enough to remember interest rates hitting 15% back in 1989 (compared with the current rate of 0.25%). Two extra points to throw in - firstly lenders are now required to look at affordability (so no chance of living off baked beans for a year just so you can pay the mortgage), and secondly long-term mortgage rates have averaged around 6.5% which means interest rates will rise to 6.5% and will have to rise further at some point to restore the long-term average.
I don't have a crystal ball, so can't say when or how rapidly this will happen, but given we all need a roof over our heads, the demand will still be there, but the ability to sell property at ever increasing prices will at some point become a thing of the past...

Wow this has derailed into such an interesting discussion about finance!
Today I finished off repairing a water wheel. New bearings, changed it from undershot to overshot which meant flipping it around, landscaping the new area and fitting a new channel. Had help from another guy. Didn't take my phone but I'm going there again tomorrow so I'll take some pics. The eventual plan is to generate a small amount of electricity.

that sounds cool, wheres your water supply coming from?
ive allways fantisized having an oldschool workshop powered by water wheel with all the overhead belt drives and what not.

It's at a friends place, they're just over the way from us and it takes five minutes to get there by car but in the way is a massive hill covered in dense bush. Their property is huge but most of it is hillside, there's a plateau on top with an electricity pylon. I climbed for about an hour whacking through the bush with a machete once but never made it to the top, it's mad! Anyway, the water just flows down from the top and if you cut into the ground with a shovel, water will appear. It's sodden to say the least - in winter there's a time when the valley will only get a single hour of sunshine in the morning because of the hills. I always take my wet weather gear because I know I'll end up working in water somehow!

Me too! Always been fascinated with water wheels, mills etc, we've still got quite a few in the UK that work and make flour etc.
I once made a model water mill at school with about 4 levels with the trap doors and working hoist etc.
The wheel had a handle that tuened all the internal gubbings roumd including the "stones" imwasmvert proud of it but it went to an art show and I never saw it again.

There is one about 2 miles from me. Used to go to school with the son of the last private owner of it, it is now owned by the National Trust for Scotland.

My Kemppi came back from a trip to Technical Arc on Friday, so I got chance to weldup the crimped end and fit the wings to the nut.
All made out the scrap bin, the Aluminium tube is the end of a tent pole.
Fiddley in use, but makes a nice job. I'll make a Haywire type, if I'm happy with pressure tests

One WW1 period boarding axe/ adze on a new shaft.
Not much, but being on call did not leave me much time.
The head.
That was boiled up in caustic soda and given a tickle with a power file. The power file took a few burrs of the back end. I guess it was struck by a heavy hammer. Not much as some I have seen, but they were there. I'm guessing as it is and adze, as well as a boarding axe it is sharpened on one edge.
Hay, when a Jack tar is wielding an axe thing at you, you do not ask yourself:
"Is that an axe or and adze he is using?"
Plus the power file removed a nick on the top edge, filled in by paint.
The single edge was dressed with an oil stone.
The new hickory shaft and so called wedges. Similar to what was in place.
I used a paint stripper and wire wool to remove the modern varnish and silly red paint.
You can guess I am not a fan.
That green stuff in a green tin, name starts with an "N" is next to useless.
But elbow grease shifted it. Then a good tickle with 800 grit wen and dry steeped in boiled linsed oil finished it off.
All ready to be assembled. The shaft is darker, due to the oil. but the flash hides it
All done, yes I know same image, but I am tired and feeling lazy.
The whole lot is now steeping in oil.

Got a PITA job today, make a stern tube, 2" OD and for 1.5" shaft, problem was the supplied tube was 1.5" ID so that had to be taken out to 1 5/8" or so to provide clearance.
Not a great thing to have to do as the tube was 450mm long so that meant having to bore out 225mm from either end and having such a long stick out on the boring bar was going to cause serious chatter issues.
First thing I did was use the spade drill to bore it out to 40mm, that went no problem as it was cutting both sides of the bore so no chatter.
Decided to try and use the spade drill as a boring bar and it proved reasonably good with less vibration than I would have had with even a 32mm dia boring bar sticking out so far. You may notice something strange in this pic
Anyway after flipping and boring the other side it was time to throw on the 4 jaw and thread one end 12 TPI for 100mm.
And with the cutlass housing screwed fully on, the reason for the excess thread is the deadwood in the boat is being altered so they wanted the tube longer and they will cut off what is not required.
Flipped around in the 4 jaw and threaded the other end, only needed to be 40mm thread on this end, same 12 TPI. Here it is with the stuffing box partially threaded on.

It is Bronze but what grade I have no idea, it was handed to me for the job.
Yes a bit of weight on the drill stopped the chatter when using it as a boring bar, obviously had to remove it as the boring progressed but by that time the chatter had dulled down.

"Made" may be pushing it, but I finished the design for a leather wallet. I use AutoCAD to draw the design before printing it out on card at a scale of 1:1. This way I can test to make sure it fits in my pocket! There are six card slots on the RHS and a pouch for receipts or bills on the left. I'm right handed, so I think that it makes sense to put the pouch on this side. It may also be big enough to hold my phone, so the cut out is to give me access to the power and volume controls. The 4 circles at the corners are press studs in nickel or brass.

Good morning gents, again not today, but over the last 3 weeks when time permits.
Had to redo a blast cabinet, it had no side doors just rubber flaps so jobs just got rolled in through the flaps and out the other side. So two doors made and fitted, floor lowered by 220mm so the customer can get bigger jobs inside, new hinges door locks and penumatic interlocks.
The doors were the biggest I could build for this cabinet. The frame of the cabinet had to be reinforsed with 50 by 50 by 3mm angle so the doors would have a flat surface to seal up against.
Funny how the floor was not mentioned when the job was being quoted, it just happened to be in the cabinet and was in very much need of attention. Most of the middle section was missing due to being worn out with use. It took me one whole day to rebuild the floor with more frames and punched metal sheet. I got told it was all quoted in the price, funny how I don't remember that
