Ally frames as above all finished now, 90 of them in total, all tigged, burnt out one torch, and even reground the tungsten 2 or 3 times, not seen on the picture is a row of pop rivets through the angle into the box frame, and a rivet nut in one of the vertical legs, glad to see the back of them,

Next part of the job is 290 steel frames to go with them

Only if you let it, get yourself in the right frame of mind and its not too bad, it pays well (very well) and is one of those jobs that comes up once or twice a year and ices the cake so to speak.

It is just something I can not do.
In the past I have done turning jobs on a manual lathe that were repetitive and took a full week to complete and even though the money was good I turned it down the next time.

^^^ I can see it would get to you, however I consider a job is a job and the money helps pay the morgage.
However like you Hood just about all my jobs are one off's so have never had to put up with repetative stuff. I would like to think that the repetative stuff you would get better at

My mortgage finished two weeks ago, even then it was less in a month than my workshop rent is in a week so it won't be noticed

My workshop mortgage was payed out by the Mrs last month as a fathers day present
Only to be replaced this month with another for a house she wanted. Funny how that works
Anyway the deal was workshop for me, then house for her, can't realy complain

I was 30 on Tuesday, not going to lie had a lot of help off the wifes family. which is all a bit alien to me. Not used to that at all.

I think nowadays, with the crazy way the housing market is, most need help. People think great, in a few years my house will be worth double what I paid, problem is so will any other house they will be wanting to buy next

'Back in the day' that may have been the case [well, perhaps not double in a short time], but there's no guarantee of appreciation now.

Like you, I don't envy youngsters starting out now - although everything is relative.

Really? I cant see that it is. Cost of living going up a lot quicker than wages etc (unless your on the doll or minimum wage it would seem)

To drag it back on topic then, today I made a loss on my lifetimes savings - as has happened every day for a good number of years.

I wouldn't like to be young today, all past generations have had it harder and we endeavoured to make things better for the young but recently that progress has slowed. In addition I wouldn't like to be starting out again, the young men don't really behave like men any more, the young girls behave more like young men particularly when they drive or go out drinking at night and it must be incredibly daunting trying to get on the housing ladder and/or planning for old age.

Today - I made a very old polisher / buffer work, it wasn't possible to get brushes but with available brushes from a similar machine, a bit of creativity and some copper shim it now works again. I put a new cable on it as it was in bits.

'er brother bought it when he was an apprentice at least 35 years ago and its worked incredibly hard almost daily since then - it cost him 350 quid all those years ago so whilst it wasn't cheap its already paid its way ;-)

Not a scrap of wear in the gearbox nor on the commutator, I cant see any reason it won't continue to earn its keep for years.

Well the built in wardrobes got their first coat to seal them (Zimsser BIN) and are now waiting a light sanding before the satin top coat.
No help from her little ones today as the Zimsser is lethal stuff, I was as high a kite for most of the afternoon!

Just reflecting on this with the wife, we bought a 2 bed semi (late Victorian ex farm worker's cottage - brick under slate - nothing chintzy, no roses around the door and no mains drainage.) in 1972 for 3.5 times the then average salary, the same property sold in 2014 (not by us) for 9 times the current average salary.
Only change is the owners took our two wood burners out and replaced them with central heating and a really crappy job they did of it.

Anyway, those Tory bankers have done well - house buyers not so.
