I have some old light duty scaffolding going rusty looks just like thatOften before I became ill I would undertake fabrication and welding work for local artists and sculptors, making the frames and armatures for them to go all artistic on. If they could afford me I would sometimes under their closely supervised direction make the sculpture for them: my metal working skills realising and bring into the corporeal world their inner-vision and artistic talent.
Over the last few days I have been making some cuboids for a local sculptress. Each of the cuboids has identical exterior dimensions, but are made from different materials. It has not been easy for me. My illness has slowed me down considerably and working on pre-rusted steel is not a straight forward task, which meant each cuboid took me about 1 hour to make but that 1 hour took place over the space of half-a-day.
I have stacked up the cuboids ready for collection; there is no artistic form here, just a convenient stack. They have also been lightly sprayed with a solution of vinegar and salt and left out in the current rain which will help with the artist's requirement for rusty surfaces. They will be installed tomorrow ready for the exhibition opening on Sunday at Halesworth in Suffolk, but I do not yet know how they will be installed or placed.
The exterior dimensions are 20" X 15" X 8"
Top to bottom:
8mmØ solid steel bar.
12mmØ solid steel bar
¾"Ø steel circular hollow section (CHS)
20mm X 20mm steel square hollow section (SHS)

Some rusty old self erecting scaffolding cut down and with new rectangular feet welded on made up the first part of this job for this sculptress, but I did not photograph it when I did it for her last week.I have some old light duty scaffolding going rusty looks just like that

Remember those galvanised tote boxes, all the best factories had them?Love those levelling jacks…

I’ve one in my van rammed full of offcuts from the saw, every profile of steel bar in a size up to 100mm,including a box of shims 8 thou to 80.
In a previous life I used to get frighteningly angry when things went wrong and I injured myself, to the point where I would pick up anything close at hand and throw it as far as I could, usually accompanied by extremely violent language .A monkey (as it's known amongst sappers) or a post basher, as it's more commonly known. We already had one but it is only 500mm long and has a nasty habit of falling off the top of the post and taking casualties; got me twice, SWMBO once (don't ask what she was doing with a monkey! Oh alright then, we were prepping for a festival in northern Portugal), and it also gave Sapper Mike a good clout as well. Didn't have big enough pipe to extend the old one so I cut up an old acroprop and made a new one 1m long. I particularly enjoyed designing and welding the mitre bevels on the handles. I could have paid a little more attention aligning the handles but hey.

You missed the opportunity to make a dB killer mufflerDid some cutting and sticking to an exhaust to keep all the silencing effect while shortening it
Shortened as it is just going to be used on my engine test bed that runs them out the car so no need for all the extra length to take to rear of car
The thin exhaust pipe I blew a few holes in but all in all went well

What would that be welded like ?You missed the opportunity to make a dB killer muffler
Got a bit busy today. Couple of pool railings on the go. But need to have child proof catches on the access gates. Scratch head a bit, plus back of envelope. Came up with an idea, roller on the bottom of a slide, that rides up the catch and drops into a recess. But, to lift it out, you have to use a knob that has a spring behind it, so not practical for a child with feeble fingers.. Gates also have to self close, so spring units are also in build. Local places don't seem to have the classic twisted springs??
Pics tomorrow.
