Now that's what I'm talking about. Mobil home
The British Legion collected this, well I sent it to them in a pre-paid jiffy bag.Bit of fun the last few days.
I got this penknife a few weeks ago, it sat around for a bit, so the last few days I have striped it and cleaned it up. Only to find a surprize.

The case was swollen with rust, the loop was broken and the blade was curved from years of sharpening.

Broken down into bits and left in Citric acid for a few days.

When the metal parts were cleaned up a Government Broad arrow, a date stamp, a name and a Ships Book number was found, on different parts.
Plus some soft metal bars to make new rivets.
RHS Third and fourth parts form the blade springs. The look identical, but they are not. So it is best to make sure you know what spring goes with what blade.

Assembled and new edges onto the blades.
The Royal British Legion have ben sent an E mail to see if we can get more details on the owner, with luck return it to the family.
Easier with a slitting disc on the grinderView attachment 300771
Hacksaw practise. I think that wore a few teeth. 220mm long with 130mm to repurpose.
I did think that but didn’t want to say!!Easier with a slitting disc on the grinder
Much too hot for hacksawing todayI did think that but didn’t want to say!!
Interesting, theres a few. I had a look with loupe and they are proud of the surface, so I guess they form as the bead solidifies? That's a crack.
Tbh mate I'd leave it. It's the grade of steel and likely no preheat/slow cool.Interesting, theres a few. I had a look with loupe and they are proud of the surface, so I guess they form as the bead solidifies?
Grind out and reweld?

Dipped a few times gettting the height adjuster on
And first chips facing some bar, 150mm stickout and no problem.
Well not today, yesterday. Dug my precious out (the tin of Kasenit, it is mostly the real thing) and set to with the big propane torch as the little one was definitely out of gas. Worth mentioning that the tongs you see in the pic were made for me by Glen a looong while back now, just after he was setting up I think and they are really really nice to use, I have a few pairs.
This is Glens website and yes, I know you are supposed to make your own as a "Blacksmith" and yes you can pick them up for peanuts (has anyone actually tried paying with peanuts?) but it's nice to support fellow tradesmen around the world: https://www.gstongs.com

The little bottle benefitted from sitting in the fridge for half an hour first:

Slitting saw on the mill or even on the lathe were my thoughts.I did think that but didn’t want to say!!
A slitting disc (abrasive type) will cut through hard steel easier than any toothed blade/disc method in my experience.Slitting saw on the mill or even on the lathe were my thoughts.
