Whilst it's a good idea in principle it will also require the proper maintainence regime to keep it in working order. If the maintainence isn't kept up then they won't stay illuminated for very long in a power cut.
How many of these domestic customers will ever test emergency lights or replace the batteries? And how do they feel about those damn green lights?

Paint over most of the green witness LED with a black maker pen to reduce the illumination.. it's not in the a public so what you do at home is of little consequence . I can see the muted LED's on both back up lights , If the mains drops out it still illuminates with the safety lighting . We check our units on the first of each month without fail .

Not sure about the bearings but you need a taper reamer to finish off the holes for the taper pins.

I photo'd the shaft a few minutes ago and also checked the pin holes..
Whooooo! , they are parallel drilled holes not reamed tapers .. so I'll be using long Allen head metric bolts , nylock nuts and Loctite to set then safe & sound in the collars & shaft after through drilling the collars to the same diameter .

Got my ears bent in 2015 for a £1200 pure sine wave genuine 2kw Honda genny , delivered & run up for the first time for 1/2 hr on 15 June 2015 It's been used numerous time off grid and as home back up . Wife now says I'm glad you brought the genny . Sat here at the desk I've just peeked into the log book , it's been run 9 times & has 13 hrs. run time in the log book .
I'll be braving the warmer weather tomorrow , to fully recharge the battery using the faithful de-sulphating charger ,bclean and grease the terminals with Vaseline then give it a 20 min warm up & load test run

There are portable lithium back up units already available, can be charged with mains, solar, 12v ect. A few sparks I know use them for dis board changes so there is some power available, also a couple of boat owners I know have them. The one below is 200w but bigger capacity ones are available!

Had a go at cutting clear acrylic on the laser cutter. I tend to leave the bathroom window open and wonder why it's Baltic hours later. This is a Hive door and window sensor but designed for flush fitting doors. Window is inset 16mm so needed 5 layers of 3mm to get it close.

It works but it isn't pretty.

Cuts really cleanly at 5mm/second I really ought to use acrylic more it's a lovely material.

Is that condensation on the inside glass ..if so there might be microscopic condensation eventually getting into the hive unit unless you truly seal it up including any drilled screw holes ..

It was a common problem with glass break detectors and any other micro electrics within a moist atmosphere after a while .. One early morning minus 18 oC outide I got called out to a secure office area that was very humid & warm inside , the sensors adjacent to & break glass stuff on the windows & frames had shorted inside on the circuit boards due to localized condensation . Same with a site that was a private swimming pool where it was always hot & humid

So, after futzing about for a while on giving me the dimensions, the job to make four safety window grills became urgent. I had made some before to the same design, so should be OK. Errrmm, needs some twisted bar as part of the design, but non locally and no time to order. So...

That is a bit of 16x 40mm bar and the nut/bolt 16mm too.
The twisted bar is 14mm and I did one turn in 20cm. One needs to heave quite hard, but it gets over the problem, so can fab the grills up tomorrow.
Many houses here have window sills very close to the floor in the upper stories. In this case, 60cm and there must be some barrier up to 120cm to stop people falling out. Esp if the place is rented, which this is. The main house, next door, has the third story sills at about 30cm and I did those some time ago. I mentioned these ones at the time to the letting agent, but nothing happened, even with reminders. Now, I find out, the owner got aware, so everybody is panicking as the tenants have young children.

A bit of 2mm sheet to go on chip guard. Vice bender was at its limit, and needs modifying so that it doesnt constantly drop down. Bigger vice wouldnt help as the design is poo and cast iron is not easily be improved...

Then trying to plan a rack for boring bar holders, to go on side of tool cabinet, its going to need a bigger bit if sheet. I might use 1.2mm instead, but thats hidden back of garage.

I've used internal UPVC window cill skinning plastic about 9 inches wide by 10 mm thick left over from a job done years previously , screwed in at the longest side edge and pushed out at the bottom with a strip of wood to give reclining " L " shaped shelf some four feet long .

The chuck has a morse taper comes with the lathe and can be used with any of these home made live centre supports of different diameters , whereas you need several different diameters of tube support ing live centres with morse tapers at a greater expense

I have a fixed & a moving steady that needs modifying to fit my lathe ... They will have to wait till I have got the back shaft back in action so I can use a fly cutter to get the precision base plate of the fixed steady made & built up to the correct height .

I can visualise your device I too have also recently purchased an RJG live tailstock centre

Mate works at a hospital and is an electronics whizz and he got lots of lead acid back up batteries from work, they gave them to him as its cheaper than paying to dispose of them.

He built his own system above his consumer unit which consists of a rack of intelligent chargers and 12 batteries and they are on an intelligent charge while mains power is on so are always fully charged, if power goes out it switches on a home built LED light in his consumer unit and several more strategically placed (his words) lights around his home which turn on and are powered by some of these 7 and 10 amp batteries, the 4amp batteries can be removed and power more home built lanterns which he can move around his home to light specific areas.

He obtained a large lead acid battery pack of over 2000 amps and placed it in his shed and connected this to a medium invertor and can switch his boiler over to this to run the electrics for his gas central heating for several hours.

He also has a small invertor suitcase whisper generator to top all these up if necessary and in the event of a power outage he can switch to these and have light and heat in his house and the last power cut they had saw his house lit up like a Christmas tree, and heated.

I got a handful of batteries from a hospital, they're "Standby" batteries and not made to be discharged more than a couple of times a year. I actually had similar plans for them but after five years on a trickle charger they're pretty crap, and now they're my problem to dispose of.
