Super Glue Vapour

Has anybody managed to use a tube of superglue twice? They are always rock solid the second time I go to use it.

I use those tiny tubes of superglue. They seem to be much better than the larger tubes.

It doesn't work always, but if you squeeze the air out of the tube, then tighten the cap you might get lucky.

Squeezing air out of the tube just encourages the glue to set. It's an anaerobic adhesive i.e. it sets in the absence of air. It seems best to dispense the glue in a way that doesn't suck any contamination back into the tube, and also to shake the glue back into the tube with a flick of the wrist, as if to reset a mercury clinical thermometer. I find that the little blob left in the end of the nozzle always goes hard, so a good shake is the way to go.

Anyone got a recommendation for a good super glue that does last? Draper was mentioned, about £9 a bottle on fleabay go for that?

Diall stuff, from B&Q appears to be one of the better ones.

If you buy decent stuff yes, most of my decent bottles last 2-5 years.

I know a guy who opened a tube of super glue on a hot day in his shed.

It squirted out and into his eye. He then rubbed his eye which subsequently led to him gluing his fingers, eyelid and eye together!

Be warned on that!! I always remember that when opening tubes. He had to be taken to hospital with hand in place under extreme pain and needed laser eye surgery etc after

The only positive of being longsighted...always need glasses for close up work. May not be nail gun proof, but that sort of thing, Yep!

Fitted a lot of those.

I dont mis being upside down feet over the back of the seat hands tucked up under the dash then dropping the tools so have to extricate yourself to pick it up.

I used to take the seat out. Soggy footwells!

From wiki ...so it needs to be kept dry, not free from oxygen. So not technically not anaerobic like loctite.

Storage in the refrigerator, prolongs the life of an open package of glue. The lower the humidity, the longer the glue lives.
Threaded caps do not seal well.

There is a problem with using the fridge for superglue storage in that it can be an extremely damp place for some time after the fridge door has been opened, and relatively warm and moist room air enters the cold compartment.

Oxygen acts as an inhibitor to the polymerisation reaction, hence the reason why superglue containers come with a relatively large headspace. It's not a marketing ploy to make a little bit of glue look like a lot! In that sense, suerglue is anaerobic, and the reason why components need to be as close-fitting as possible for the glue to set i.e. by excluding oxygen. Either that, or it's surface chemistry that catalyses the polymerisation, or a bit of both.

I was firmly convinced that the polymerization reaction of isocyanate is triggered by moisture in the air.

This is indeed the case, but isocyanates are used in things like expanding polyurethane foam, and are different to superglue, which is a cyanoacrylate.
