oooOOOooo I do love them!
I looked for one for a bit but couldn't find a decent manual for sensible money. I didn't think they were soo bad for rust though tbh! also surprised you can get sills etc for it becuase I know 200's are bad for rust and nowhere seems to sell replacement panels for them.
Hi Sphinx, I was luck to some degree, I bought mine from my boss, He had recently put a new engine complete with turbo's in before being given the Bad news about the corrosion. As for new panels etc' it took me 18 months to import them from Japan via a company down south. I believe I had some of the last remaining parts.
Question to all, I will not be welding for a couple of weeks or so. Will be busy fitting interior so as to get her back on the ground and up and running. Would you still like me to post as I go even though it is not welding exactly. I still have some areas that will require attention as regards welding but the lure of giving her a run up the street is strong.
Hi Redwine, I'm sure that most folks following this thread are motoring enthusuasts like you and indeed me! So if you are doing mechanical or interior or paintwork on your car that will be interesting as well!
Or maybe start another thread in "projects" section covering the other work until you start welding again?? Maybe the moderators can give some guidance on this as they run the forum. But I for one would be very interested to see what you are up to!
Thanks Guy's, Not much progress i'm afraid, Farthers day got the better of me. Still recovering. Managed to get a bit of sound deadening done though. I went with a heavy duty at the front and a lighter grade at the rear. I wish i could say there was a technical reason for it but it was due to the fact that the lighter grade was easier to keep down. The front stuff just kept lifting on me. Also hoped to get some of the carpets back in but the seam sealant i ordered weeks ago still has not turned up. Ebay eh??
I've had to lay sound-proofing recently, to entertain myself I made it like a puzzle otherwise it was mind-numbingly dull. Plus it was cold so I had to heat everything up in order for it to stick.
Looks good though! When do you think it'll get painted? is that something you will do or leave that to the pro's?
Hi Sphinx, Know what you mean, Tedious or what, still, can't be all welding i suppose, mores the pity. I will take up your lead with regards to preheating the sound proofing when i do the drivers side. As for paint, I don't know exactly when i will be in the position to start just yet. At the moment i am contemplating painting myself, just started to read up on it. By the way, your car looks nice, what make etc' is it?
It's a 325i coupe, manual with an LSD (all in the details lol):
It's taken a bit to get it looking like this as I bought it with LOADS of niggles. Still a long way from what I would consider finished but it's getting there.
Very nice!! That picture has given me even more reason to get mine finished. Well done indeed. If I get somewhere close to yours I will be more than happy.
Thanks
You can't make out the bad bits in that pic; it had a stupid M3 spoiler on it which I wanted rid of, but that left holes obviously. My ghetto tape repair keeps the water out but doesn't look too pretty lol
Without wishing to take over your thread, if you want to have a look at what's been done to it (not much compared to your re-build!), it's on my site under 'car history' http://www.tckehoeonline.co.uk
Sorry that this is a little more of the same, but taking on board some pointers from Sphinx with regards to heating the sound proofing prior to laying, the difference with getting it to go in all the right places was very noticeable. (Cheers Sphinx )
One thing I would like to know is, As I have been struggling to source sealant, I finally managed to get some black Tiger Seal and made a start on the inside. Will this be O.K.? Also is it over paintable? As I was doing the inner joints i also toyed with trying to seal the top of the sill edge. Not sure if i should pursue this though. Especially if i am not able to paint over it. What do we think?
Thanks Migwire and Pedrobedro. I will try and pick up some brush on sealer at the weekend. I have fitted most of the interior so as to get her up and running which will enable me to get her in the garage while away on holiday. It is not to big a job to lift the carpets etc' to seam seal at a later date.
By the way katbloke, thanks for you comments and welcome to the forum. I hope that for anyone starting a welding restoration will also get inspiration as you say. I certainly did from the examples on here.
At the risk of a ticking off, I couldn't resist showing some of my latest pictures. I promise I will be cutting and welding soon.
