It can't only be me can it?.... You see an item for which you have no real current need for, but you have to have it as 'that is going to come in useful one day' I've done this numerous times, some of these bits have been on the shelf for decades. But the latest item has been sitting around for a mere 2 and a bit years. Its the huge reversing switch that @skotl advertised (just pay the postage) on this site. I've just finished tidying it up and installing it on my DSG type 17 this afternoon. The type 17 DSG has a clever mechanical reverse on the speed selector, but reverse isn't available on all speeds. It's a lot easier and quicker to just reverse two phases to back the tool out when screwcutting.

Now I've confessed, is there anyone else on here with the 'come in useful one day' syndrome?

Yes, I had a tidy up just before Christmas. I hate throwing out any steel, however small a piece, and have been keeping all of the off cuts from jobs over the last four years, plus all the scrap a neighbour donated when he moved away. I figure there will always be a job come along for which one of these bits will be just right, though that day never seems to come. Of course I’m well aware that the day after I go to the tip with it that job will come along.

I bought a big 3 phase pillar drill off a member here about 3 years ago because "that will come in handy" and it's still in bits on my bench!

if not used in 2 years its gone, otherwise id need more than 2 sheds as my job dosnt tends to be one of those where i would need a very large yard to store stuff in or better still a warehouse would be needed

I did until we moved. I had to get rid of literal tonnes of metal and things. It greatly upset me but as I have a very small workshop I had to do it.
Having said that I do have a huge cast iron Wadkin wood planer I got off the new neighbour because he was going to scrap it

Aye, perhaps around 80% of the tools I have - and around half my clothing.

Guilty here too! I have 3 garages full of stuff that will come in useful! This summer the one that I have not seen the back wall of for 4 years will be sorted out as my mountain bike is in there somewhere as are 4 kayaks and a 14ft canoe that I can just see one end of!

People if my own persuasion....it has to be saved " just in case".
But now I really "know" I need to shift more stuff.
A lot of it will make a few quid here and there. But a lot of it needs time to build, repair, create etc etc

However I now know that at 65 this coming November and collecting my pension year later means I won't need much of my fallback items.
Add to that I have almost completed the backroom roof .insulation project so I can work in there even if it's hot or cold outside.

These'll come in useful someday, couldn't resist their chunky metallic allure, they'll be an interesting thing when I get them neatly connected together, yea right!
Lost count of how many times the gert big heavy things have they been in my way and needed moving. WTF was I thinkin?

Guess what, I've got to move them again tomorrow!

Guess what, they contra rotate so the belting and set up will be a nightmare!

I don't need any of it.

I could do everything I can with that on my pc probably easier.


But I always wanted em. So I did.



Tool wise I only buy what I need. And il always try and write the cost into a job
