These are a godsend when your 5th man in to a job and allen bolt heads are fubar.

I use these as first tool more often than not to remove allen bolts then proper allen key to refit.

I've had some jobs where I wouldn't have been able to fix them without these (or it would have ended in a significantly more expensive job!.).

I like them. You get more than your fair share of rounded heads working on bikes and peds!

Torching up rims with tyres on - is dangerous - very dangerous.

Pyrolysis can occur in temperatures as low as 185°C

ok ,, ill ask ,,, how on earth is burning wheel nuts off going to cause pyrolysis

I'd recently seen an ad for those "twisted" allen keys, but thought they were a gimmick - interesting to know they work.
So far, 35 yrs of working on stuff, with rounded off socket cap heads, I've got away with hammering in a torx drive from a no-name set I bought as a student from a market stall on The Moor in Sheffield.
Don't know what it is made off, but the only thing to have failed in the set is the thin plastic liner inside the tin box - survived the above abuse, being used with air impact guns and with 6 ft long levers.

Ive a few like that in the tool box that I made myself being hamfisted sometimes!

Not seen the OPs one before.

They do one which is like a socket with the opposite profile of those inside for studs. They work well but you need a good half inch or so left, which is rare.

I use the small ones to tap into drilled ign lock shear bolts to remove them.

Go in from the top with a slitting disc, take off two edges of the nut, then just tap off the remains of the nut with a chisel, thread damage if any is minimal it any.

That would have been a safer option. I did manage to avoid the thread. Some of the little remaining rings of thread fell out which spoiled the look a bit. I should have used a slitting disc though but I just used what was in the grinder.

You've not lived until you've ground a nut off a Marzocchi Magnesium wheel.

Probably £1000 worth for a new one..

Took approx 300 ftlb and didn't move a mm so out with the grinder (after talking to customer obviously!).

It's the propagation of the heat that is the problem.

When I was making up this vice stand I let the air out of the tyre and stuck a pressure gauge on it while I welded the plate to the wheel rim, pressure rose to 10 psi after welding it.

yep , thats as grim as a day gets ,,,, been there , done that .
one of the scariest things I witnessed was a lorry sitting on 4 axle stands with the cab tilted , and a guy sledging out stubs ,,, how it happened i dont know , but he hit the pin so hard with a hammer the whole truck just slid forwards off balance , and off all four stands at once.
the noise was unbelievable ,,, the entire shed shook , and it was about eighty feet long and steel clad ,,, then the whole place was silent ,,,, as luck had it it rolled forwards and away from the guy ,,, but it was the following seconds that lasted a long time , waiting to see who was killed ,,,, that as thirty five years ago , and I can remember it like it was yesterday ,,,, shows how fast simple things can go wrong.

Kirkstall forge front axles were the easiest. Just undo the large nut on the top and slide the pin out by hand. Brilliant bit of engineering.
