Dont know what everyone is complaining about. Get a ford or landrover with a heated screen
have fitted a kit to my disco that will fire up the webasto well before i get in it.

the webasto in most Landrovers is a water heater connected to the engine cooling system, its because below certain temps. modern diesels dont create enough heat to keep the engine at optimum working temp and the occupants warm.

So you get into a nice warm car

I too use this method, but wouldn't if I wasnt in the middle of nowhere. Another way is to put car in shed or garage, works a treat.

There goes somebody with enough room in the shed /garage to swing a cat.

Not the same thing.
Seems most new cars come already equipped (aftermarket does good business adding them as well)
Push the remote on your key fob, and the vehicle starts and runs, while locked.

I guess I will get to experience the wonders in 10-15 years time!

My Mondeo simply won’t get to full temp without driving it a few miles. Even with a new ‘stat in it just sits at the bottom of the temp gauge. Once it’s driven and up to temp it stays there rock steady though.

A lady friend of mine tells me her neighbour left his car running to warm it up, yesterday morning, and went back in the house, and someone took off in the car. She lives on a reasonably bush street though.

I've seen a Subaru Justy with a block heater stuck to the side of it . . . car came from Cornwall . . . not usually the coldest place in the world for long enough to need one!

Yes, most diesel's I've been around, including mine, you always plug them in the night before, some on a timer.

that reminds me - I've got a bit of insulation board, cut and shaped to fit nicely infront of a Lancia radiator somewhere . . .

I just cover the screen with cardboard or use tap water to clear it. We have one of these Frostblocker protectors for the wifes car. Its really good, covers the wipers too -

How long since you have seen it ?Pound to a pinch of salt it has been seconded onto another job and will no longer fit .

The large trucks around here, some still use a canvas affair, purpose made, to cover the Rad.
You can unfold it in triangles, snaps to hold the sections folded back.

I do have more than one shed though. Since I sold most of my bikes and my Landy I can usually get a car in the shed, pick up fits in beside the tractor in our farm shed too if required, but don't usually bother as its too much hassle moving stuff about.

Every time I go out in the cold I think ‘tomorrow I’m gonna have me a look and see what air flow I can cut off’. And after 8 years I’ve still not done it…….

Mate with a VW diesel van did it with his, used to take 5 miles driving to get to temp, so he went in and filled no end of gaps around the engine bay and radiator. Now it takes a mile to get to temp.

On some aircraft they make a set of lovers to go in front of the rad so you can choose how much air goes through or shut it off completely, when your flying in -10c at 100mph plus, keeping the engine warm is a bugger.
Often wondered about doing that for my van it can take 5-10 miles to get anywhere near temp

If the thermostatic valve in the cooling system is working properly, there should not be any need to cover any part of the radiator, since the coolant should only start to flow through the radiator when the engine gets close to working temperature. That seems to be how it worked on the cars I've had over the years, at least. I appreciate cooling systems can vary, from vehicle model to model, and there may be those that operate differently.

Very important that we don't forget the aged in our community when the weather gets bad...called at 4 houses today in my road and asked if they need any vitals (bread,milk,etc) picking up as i could see they had not been out by no foot prints in the snow on there driveways and door steps. Being the old school they had bought twice before the snow came, you cant teach an old dog new tricks as they have been through this many times in there lives.

i already did so by digging out there paths for my local ones

but ive caught a cold for it and lungs are still full of phlem but i sweated most of it staying wraped up to hell

this year is the worst ive seen my local rd its like the council gritters cant be bothered to grit the rds

and now its deadly with pure ice on our rd alone ive only seen the gritter 3 times and 2 of those times during the day with one pass and a scrape and then another hardly any grit on the rds

its like they havent bought any grit to clean the rds whilst funding there pedestrian pathways for the town center

as goes for the pathways our was well cleaned by the gritters as the sand salt mixture landed on the causeway so helped to clear that as well

Exactly.

I have bought many cars and EVERY car has needed a new thermostat. I fit new ones and it improves warm up times immensely. People just don't know how quick a car should warm up and thermostat performance does decay over many years use. It still works mind and car won't overheat but it will not warm up as quickly or efficiently as it can.

Put it somewhere safe after fitting an new stat. But I have seen it recently. ie this century.

Last integrale used to have a pretty hot heater. This one has always been pants - new stat, triple checking connections, pulled the air con heat exchanger out (not used - figured it was taking heat out) - doing so requires engine out to get room. Last engine out I fitted a new control valve and resealed the heater box, taking out all the rest of the air con gubbins. Possibly I should have fitted a new core as I now think the original is probably not as free flowing as it used to be.
