I'm still traumatised by walking the couple miles to primary school in cold wellies and the uniform short trousers in 1979/80 - my mum didn't feel the need to equipment with unnecessary long trousers until I needed them . . .

Wellies weren't tall enough for the depth of snow, so cold, wet, toesies . . .

I was the same in the 60's, I didn't wear any long trousers until I left junior school at 11

Makes the daily slog to school more invigorating eh ?

13 for me, even then I had to argue my case with my parents. I was the only one in the class in shorts. Also made to wear a school cap, off it came as soon as I walked out of the door, “but mum, nobody wears a cap” didn’t wash!

Luckily for me, the grammar school I went to had ceased requiring first years to wear short trousers and caps the year before We still got benches to sit on in assembly, rather than chairs like the rest . . .

As far as I remember, we stood for assembly, memory is a bit hazy, I left school in 1965. Now school dinners, don’t start me on them ……

But all these things in school conditioned you to accept lifes challenges as you became an adult. Unlike many of our current youngsters who have various mental health issues and cant cope in real life. Sadly the world is real, not everyone gets everything they want, they don't win prizes for failure ( politicians excluded), or coming last.

Not just young youngsters either - got 30 odd year old here at work who seem unable to cope with anything outside their usual day to day.

From 3rd year onwards we were considered mature enough for long trousers. God only knows what Dickensian sadistic power trip that was based on, but the school was apparently 600 years old. King Edward VI Grammar School, in Stafford.

We had chairs, I once got the cane for "discharging a water pistol" during assembly

13 for me also but there was a reason. The school uniform included grey trousers but as by then I had developed strong anti rules feeling I wore short Lederhosen which were grey. By the age of 13 they were becoming embarrassingly short so I had to give in . My school mate also refused "longs" but had to relent and I will always his anguished cry the first time he wore them when we all went for a communal P**s as he fumbled with the flies " It's working but I can't find it" A communal P**s was when a group of us decided to disrupt the lesson and all troupe out together leaving the master with a skeleton class of goodies. We were definitely 3rd stream grammar .

We had a sadistic headmaster - ex army - enforcing shirt sleeve order - from 01 Apr to 01 Oct.

I remember the time when we were in jumpers till we roasted and shirt sleeve order with sleeves rolled up till we froze?

Talking to a friend earlier and he remarked how most of the local schools were closed because of the weather but we couldn’t remember a single time we were closed or sent home early.

Be fair ,In our day we didn't have the charge of the Chelsea Tractors to contend with .Just a slow trudge to and from while trying to avoid being snowballed .

I lived 7 miles from grammar school, had to catch the regular service bus in and out, every day, for five years. The concept of parents taking a kid to school was unheard of.

I only remember one day in five years that we were ‘down for weather’, and that was when the school heating system wouldn’t fire up, so we were all sent home.

At the Grammar School several of the teachers came on push bikes or bus, seem to recollect no more than half a dozen cars. When I was sixteen I was refused permission to arrive by motorcycle, actually a scooter but no chance.

At my brothers school, at the end of term assembly, someone laid a bog chain across the strings of the grand piano. Apparently the noise was horrendous.

In my youth 84 I think, we had bad snow in Devon, school buses cancelled, the lot, my mum was a teacher at the secondary I attended, the 4 mile run in a Morris Traveller was horrendous she said. Many staff phoned in unable to attend.

The headmaster cycled in 12 miles to make a point, heads rolled.

In the '80s we walked two miles to primary school in all weathers, (and back), though not in shorts, admittedly.
