Hah, the first secondary school I was at had the old building still standing as an annexe to the newer building. In each classroom of the old building was a fireplace and hearth.
Never used when I was there, as thankfully central heating had been installed a hundred years before I got there.
Did my good deed of the year - down the steep, narrow, high banks, inches deep ice covered back road into my village this evening, I came across a Fiesta facing up the hill, but backwards into the gulley/wall/hedge on the uphill side . . as I rolled past, I noticed the drivers window was down and there was a more mature lady in there on the phone . . .
I carried on past . . . stopped . . . reversed up, wound the passenger window down to check she was okay . . . stuck - trying to turn round, she slipped down into the gulley/verge/hedge/wall . . . people had tried to push her out by failed . . . so down to the bottom, turned round, put my tow ball in, back up the hill . . . emptied her boot and spare wheel well through the back seat (tailgate against a tree) - couldn't find the towing eye to screw into the empty socket in the front . . laid on the floor, strap around the front suspension bracket and try to set off on my non-winter tyres . . . it did! but stalled - Lancia integrale doesn;t exactly have a crawler first, or much torque at low revs. Three stalls later I'd got up up out and up the hill, but was now fully on the ice - three wheels spinning (no LSD in the front) .
But enough for her to think she could now try to carefully reverse down - suggested she try control with the handbrake as if the front locks, no steering.
Back to the Lancia - couldn't set off on my own! Two roll-backs and I was off - up the hill to space to turn round and back down . . . to find her in the bank on the other side . . . Got her out with directions rather than towing.
Offered to make me a cake as thanks
Lancia clutch probably still smells four hours later!
New Defender squeezed past us while I was contemplating how to assist . . .

Mine too. The same cast iron central heating is still partly there, the hearths you can't see anymore.
We had to sit on t’floor,once you were in the 4th year you had chairs.We had chairs, I once got the cane for "discharging a water pistol" during assembly

One of our teachers found his Austin 7 swinging from the 1st floor fire escape one afternoon. Never found out who did it.

That must have been what prompted our 6th formers as the year is about right.
Sign of the times as the recreation was deemed " unsafe" . Bl***y H&S sucking the fun out of life.

Just been informed by SWMBO that our Postie was wearing shorts as usual .
I didn't see him myself I was too busy getting the dog to move so I could sit closer to the woodstove.
