say if you was planning on using the oven /welder /whatever you will just do that before or after the cut and use just the same amount of power

One presumes they would be at peak times to shed the load, and or at different times in different areas to smooth out the overall demand to match the supply, rather than cranking up the supply to match the demand.
Writing has been on the wall since the introduction of smart meters, wouldn't surprise me if it serves as a convenient testbed for some elements of future strategy.

It is meant to achieve a leccy supply to most of the country/population by not having unplanned removal of power. If the grid is overstressed (more leccy used than being generated), it will close down - possibly blacking out large swathes of the country. Power cuts, if necessary, prevent grid failure. They would also be shared around more equitably than perhaps one region suffering most of the power failures.

Power would be re-instated when there was sufficient generation for those affected areas. It has absolutely zilch to do with the total amount of energy that may be used after, or before, a cut - it is not so much a matter of saving power (although it will, of course) but rather protecting the grid from uncontrolled shutdown - which can cause great difficulty in restarting the generators thrown off-line.

The National Grid goes to great lengths to keep our leccy supply steady within its legal constraints. They do a marvellous job every day of the year. But they cannot operate a fully operational system if there is insufficient generation.

Gas supplies to domestic users must be maintained. If there is insufficient gas available, the electricity generators using gas will be curtailed.

where the power will be kept is london for its data and the rest its tough luck if we are faced with any blackouts

its the same with the rich areas they will make sure the power gets to them than the rest of the population of coarse there not going to upset the posh areas / city areas with power

What gaz1 says is quite off the mark. Yes, the UK has been supplying a lot of power to continental europe recently. We also import a lot at times.

The recent problem has been caused by pukin. Gas storage has been run down over the last several years (uneconomic) but now is suddenly important.

The UK has aided our european generators to raise their gas storage to as high a level as possible before the winter. It has been a better idea to burn gas in the UK to send generated leccy to France, etc than send gas. The UK had better facilities to process liquified natural gas than some other nations.

We are all in this together. Hopefully, the nuclear stations in France, etc will help out our generators during trying times during the winter months. Meanwhile, they are also increasing faciities for accepting/processing liquified natural gas imports. It is a case of everyone doing their best to maintain energy supplies.

The cost of that energy is an entirely different matter, as I see it.

This is when being a medieval re-enactor is very useful. We are accustomed to cooking without power I for one will revert to a more medieval way of thinking., Get up when it is light. go to bed when it's dark. dig the sheepskins out for warmth. Where did you get that from ?

I pay €196 a month, that's nearly €2400 a year, with hardly any electrical heaters, yes, the kids have them in their bedrooms, if the house here really cold over winter, though wood burners heat the house.

EDF provide 20% of UK electricity.
