When we had "snowmaggedon" here in 2013? with 4 ft snow drifts the electric was off for a week. With a wood fueled cooker that also heats the hot water and a multifuel stove, we were just fine - ran a small generator for about an hour a day to keep the fridge and freezer working and even dragged in an old tractor battery to run the tv through a small inverter to watch aerial views of the snow covered island. The fairly modern housing in the village were all electric. They couldn't cook or get hot water or heat their houses, and ended up in the village hall where a local building contractor had loaned a large generator so they could at least cook food.
Bad idea to be just reliant on mains electric.....
