I have a tin of this stuff which I used on the apron gears today. From your suggestion I take it it will be ok to use then?

Here's a good tip, always plug the end of your spindle.

Just had a peep at the state of my lathes oilyness, it's actually not quite so bad as usual, but just look at the chips/swarf that's found it's way out of the end of the spindle bore.

I keep it plugged but had forgotten after turning a long rod the other day, and have been making lots of chips today, this will do more damage to the Zamak gears than anything else,

Don't think it matters what you use, your ears will tell you when to slap a good dollop on

Thinking about that moly grease, it may act as a sticky chip magnet, so keep an eye on that.

Using a squirt of oil instead helps to flush chips away better,

I sometimes use way oil on open gears. Sticks quite well but only use a little or you get this

Another video. The rattle is coming from the motor itself. The gear train is really quiet.

Drop the tumbler banjo out of engagement, that'll stop all the gears from turning so you can isolate the noise. If that's from the motor you either have a really bad bearing bush or one of the pulleys has an oval centre hole.

I’ll pull the motor off this week and have a look. Need to sort it anyway as the current bracket has bent to the point the pulleys are out of line.

Also the upper frame is going to need a bush as there is play in the cast frame which carries the upper pulley.

Yup, unless they're something exotic they'll be a tenner or so and half an hour's work to fit (including getting it on and off the lathe)

Motor sounded bad without the belts attached.

No roller bearings in this motor, bearing faces had a helix along their lengths.

Greased shaft, reassembled, squared up motor and fixed down with all four bolts this time not two!!
Filled head bearing oil cups with some Motul 10/40 as it was all I had and run it up. Much quieter.

Why don't you make a dual pulley for the motor drive to increase speed range?

Be careful increasing the the speed range. They are plain bearings.

But it must be meant to have a 2 stage pulley @spencer 427 as the head pulley has the second ring.

They did - mine did. Don't have any good pics for size though this is about all I got.
