Just had a reply from Clausing in Kalamazoo and they actually quoted for brand new spare parts. Saddle gears to remove the backlash, detent pins and springs, reversing gearbox gears and yoke, bull gear pin and reverse lever. Not cheap at £200 but reasonable and amazing they can still supply parts for an 80 year old lathe!

Saddle gears you make the blanks I'll glue the teeth on. Detent pin - make one. Spring - buy one. Bull gear pin - make one Reverse level - make one. Save yourself most of that £200 and most of the same again in shipping and duty. That's if you can get it shipped at all since I bet there'll be no flights to the US within a week.

You are correct @eLuSiVeMiTe , however I am comparing the average purchase of maybe £3-400 for a used lathe and having to spend the same again to get it in good order.
If they were fetching sums like the Myfords it would be more palatable.

@Pete. maybe you are correct but I don’t think my home made parts would make it any better than it is currently

I have a few bits on their way from Michael Kurn and he has graciously sent them without payment so that I can compare them to what I have first.

Could parts be cast from original new old stock parts? Is there even any point?

Which parts need making? On my Atlas the 3-legged gear support behind the handwheel had one broken leg. It still worked fine but I always expected it to break though it never did. You could either machine or fabricate one in a pinch, or even cast one quite easily just by taking a mould and melting ally in a tin can.

I've had a look and I've only got Gear 9.49A left, forgot I sold a complete reversing box to another forum member a few yrs ago. But it looks like you have all you need coming anyway.

Hardest thing with some lathes is keeping the chips out of the gears, which is often what wears or brakes them.

@Gritineye let me know what you want for the gear as there is serious wear in mine. Got more serious issues too, removed the GB and found the support finger cracked and a bad offset on the left hand side where that hairline crack is. Gonna try and get a gearbox housing machined out of a block of steel. Really annoyed but it is what it is.

Don’t suppose anyone has GB dimensions I can use? Requested a drawing from Clausing but heard nothing yet.

Did manage to get the lathe to its new home though!

can you list what gears you have and take more photos of the homemade gearbox you have

then at least we can see if we can half adapt what you have got to something better

If that's not usable, how often is reversing needed? Not very often, I would just turn up a connecting shaft for the end of the lead screw and run it without one till a solution turns up.

Im not even going to go there Gaz, too many unknowns. If the reversing box is useable that’ll be enough for me.

Used the lathe this evening to sort two spacers for the cafe racer so it works just fine if you have a steady hand.

As the chuck's backing plate is of the screw mounted type, one must be very careful that the chuck doesn't spin off at speed while in reverse, which could cause possible catastrophic injury to the operator and damage to equipment.

Always worries me that one, been trying to remember when I last used reverse in anger.

Fix the crack in the other gear case and with the bits you've got coming from Micheal seems to me you'll have enough parts for a spare as well, happy chappie

I’ll only use it for light cuts when screw threading. Looking at screw cutting videos I can set my 0 and wind it out, drive back then wind in to my 0 before my next cut.

Is the box cast or Zamak? Can they be welded?
