I have only just got the MS2 solid centre but didn't set it up with that, I just went by eye. Cheers for the advice re-facing and centring. Also I think I'll try and source a blade type tool No rush though. Just happy to be progressing. Does anyone have a link for a suitable blade type parting tool to fit the small tool posts? (up to 1/2" but prefer smaller)

@Gritineye Nice job! mine was nowhere near as smooth as that. I'll try again tomorrow after I set the tool correctly. I think I'll measure it with a vernier too to check the width of the parting tool is at least parallel!

Like Gritineye, I usually power feed for parting off, but I bring the tool up against the face of the chuck (if it's fitted, vs spindle collets) - part as close to the chuck / collet as poss, and if you're supporting with the tailstock centre ease off pressure as it's about to break through or you can jam up and break something!

To be fair I don't usually part off under power, mainly because metal varies so much in machinability and size.

As the vids shows hand feeding can be just as fast.

I would also be cautious about power parting with the standard Atlas top slide in place even if it was locked down solid.

I made that vid because so many people on another forum said it was impossible to do on an Allas, it's just my stubborn ways.

You need to face off the workpiece, then square the parting tool across the face. Then lock the carriage with the square nut by the threading dial

Or if you have a flat fronted chuck, align the parting tool with the front face of the chuck.

Went to pic up a little extra box today in the form of 25x12.5 to make an upstanding all the way around the lathe stand, even if it’s just to retain the swarf. Then got out the Lidl special cut off chop saw. Not overly impressed actually due to the flimsiness of the clamp. There’s a lot of flex in it when tightening it up.
Anyway, I cut a 22.5 degree angle (no position on the saw, just 20/25 so I eyed it up. Not perfect but good enough to close it up with the old Portamig.

Seriously impressed with the TCT blade in the Makita rip saw though, ripped straight through 5mm plate.

Close enough to a 45 into a 90.

Et voila!

Used the frame to shape the corners then knocked off the finish before welding.

Excuse the lathe on its side....had to measure the base and never topped it back.

haha, cheers buddy. When I have something in my head I just wanna get on.

Had to call it early this afternoon as the wife needed to go out.
Had all the stuff from Metal Goods in Bridgend.
Last go off my Portamig started playing up. Was fine all day running at 2/5 with wire speed at 3-4 but it started stuttering on the wire feed and then after about 10 mins it stopped working. Never activated the thermal cut out in 7 years but today it went.
Just went back up the garage after leaving it for about a 2 hours and it started fine then within about half hour it started stuttering again before going out on the thermal trip again. Haven’t a clue what’s causing this now?

I like that second one, with the South Bend 9 sitting on it. It looks like it can add some decent rigidity to the machine.

mine a myford but ive still got to make mine up

i want the drawer unit in the middle of t with a 9 drawer or 6 drawer unit with cupboards either side or i might change that

but id do like the rear storage to keep it cleaner and easy access to stuff in eye view so though id save them for a few ideas

thats what i thought strong rigid frame for the lathe to go on it

i dont like the myfords unit and think its crap for the ml7 and i dont like the big myford for it either but i also want to use an oil bed as well

which i thought at the back of the drawer unit in a collection tank then pumped back up for cutting purpose

i was thinking of combining a build and stick it in the middle however it causes an issue as it off sides the legs where the bolts go through the frame

then cupboards on each side of it for bigger stuff

Just an update outside of the building a bench thread, I thought I’d stick a pic in here.

Also I’ve had an issue with my reversing box in that the sliding castellated collar which engages fed or reverse seems to be problematic in trying to engage neutral. I contacted Michael Kurn this evening who sent me a picture of the bits he will he sending me. Anyone notice the difference? Think I may have found my issue!

Just had a reply from Clausing in Kalamazoo and they actually quoted for brand new spare parts. Saddle gears to remove the backlash, detent pins and springs, reversing gearbox gears and yoke, bull gear pin and reverse lever. Not cheap at £200 but reasonable and amazing they can still supply parts for an 80 year old lathe!

Doesn't sound expensive tbh. Could pay that for one component for a Colchester etc
