Think I might have purchased an Atlas Lathe!!!

You won’t get a cnc lathe that can do what an Atlas can do for £300. In fact, looking at the photos that @Gritineye posted, I think you’d struggle even if you paid ten times that much.
That is very impressive work Mr Grit, and reminds me a little of Dave Richards and his steam-powered machine shop on YouTube - similar impressive work on older machines.

I don't understand the fascination with owning equipment that's so old... hope it does what you need of it.

the boxfords was in my school never got to use one but was around when teacher did the plumb bobs before we heat treated them

another point with them it was rare a home owner had one yeah they had a homemade wood lathe but not a lathe

as goes for fasination with them not really they are a tool if your young enough to really use it properly im probably a little old to have one but its not stopped me getting one of them

a lathe also holds its value depending on what you buy myfords do if you get one cheap enough you can double your money with extras you can make more

i also have an old milling machine is probably older than both our ages but its a working part do an adaption to it and youve done the same as a lathe and made your money yet again

now buy a new cnc machine and watch its price be floored you never get the value you payed for it infact i bet you wouldnt even get a third back in price

No disrespect intended, but that statement seems common to a younger generation. It's not about fascination to those of us who "do understand", its about tools and machinery of superior build and materials from an era where there was no compromise in quality workmanship; a time when things were either made correctly, or they didn't leave the factory. The word old is meaningless when it comes to equipment which has stood the test of time, and can be confidently relied on to do the job.

I inherited one from my grandfather in the 1980s, ex lend lease AFAIK. He bought an ex army workshop truck just after WW2, lathe, pillar drill, hand wound grinder and some other bits. My first lathe and I learned lots on it.

Light enough to be a one man carry too.

Your back must be better than mine! As lathes go they are lightly built but you won't run far with one! I have an old Sphere laying in my shed that I've been threatened to do something with for years, it's a sack barrow job to shift it!

Just found on Tony Lathes site the details for the Atlas TV36 and there’s an invoice from 1930 for a TV36 with the serial number 024444 and the one I’ve just purchased is 024429 so circa 1930!!!

Got it home to its new home and confirmed it works and the carriage auto feeds in both directions including the cross travel also has auto feed. I had a big pile of change gears with it but no chuck key or cutting tools except for the one in the tool post.
I’ll need to fit some sort of switch as it’s a little disconcerting leaning past the big pulley wheel on top to switch it on and off at the wall

If anyone has any cutting tools or more importantly a chuck key they wish to part with for beer tokens please speak up. I’m itching to get started!

It’s sat on my bench just now but I want to make a stand for it once I’ve purchased some box section. I’ll try and incorporate the Ikea draw unit into the stand so I have dedicated storage for the tools etc and a cupboard at the other end for the chucks, milling attachment, faceplate etc.

I might have a chuck key you can adapt. What size square is it? I know mine has very short handles, less than 50mm O/A.

Added. I found it, it's 7.3mm square. That's not a imperial fraction either.

My 4 jaw is roughly 7.3mm and the 4 & 5” 3 jaws are 8.6 (ish).

i wanted to use one of these so i could put tools into them all for the lathe when building a new stand

you might be interested but measure between your lathe holes and you might be able to fit one

it would also be handy to fit one where a milling machine was being used as well

or even a drill press

on another note one side could be longer as you need to change the gears so if you factor this in it could be a cupboard as well

but i was more interested in a strong base where the bolts connected to the main frame of the lathe unit

myfords are more in the middle but yours is spread more to the neds so may fit yours better

Double ended with a T bar through the middle work?

Might need a little fettling with a file your end if it's a bit tight
