Think I might have purchased an Atlas Lathe!!!

Just got my tool post back. One face modified to accept 1/2” tooling.




Well it works (kinda )

one scruffy piece of 14mm rebar turned to a 10mm shaft and 11mm shoulder and it didn’t kill or maim me!

Sorry for the late reply, didn't find any small bits, but I did find an extra 4 post tool holder in the odds and ends box. Its 2 1/2" square with a 12.70mm T-slot bolt. Here are a couple of photos. If it would better suit your lathe, you are welcome to have it. Base to slot height is about 13mm.

My base to slit bottom is about 21mm and 17mm on the newly modified side so if You don’t mind I’ll give it a shot.

any chance you could get some better photos of your greabox

im curious but as i know mine fits on end of the lathe i like it for that but it has 1 drive wheel can be switched for forward or reverse

that also means i have forward and reverse screw cutting on the lathe

Mine is nothing like that. Mine has the reverse gear which connects to the lead screw and you select forward or reverse on the front lever and engage travel on the apron lever but I can’t see this box fitting mine as the bolt holes in the bed and the bearing support are where the bed is???

It may be off an atlas but I don’t think it’ll fit mine.

Are you looking at it as if the gearbox reversing box will be in the same position as the original one on the lathe?

Maybe if you line up the gear bracket on the box with the one on the lathe, so the reversing part is off to the left, I reckon it will make more sense. Maybe

good finish too............you don't need any tutoring after all .............right next up, set of rear-sets, custom hand-grips, couple of wheel spindles, some suspension bushes, what you waiting for.........

by the way, Metal Goods Wales in Bridgend will do mall offcuts and stuff, Ive used them and they aint too dear. Express metal in Swansea sometime have a few off-cuts in the reception area, but can be funny if you want to order something special (5m min normally). Suppose the boys in Fairfield will sort you out for some small donation to the Xmas

Yeah I get that. The fact I managed to turn a piece of rubbish into a straight (excuse the narrower end) piece of bar, and even with a reasonable finish is all I wanted to prove. Now I know it can do all I’ll need.

okay maybe I can revisit the box and see if it’s doable. Still haven’t a clue if it’s part of this lathe though. I’ve asked the Q on the hobby-machinist forum as there’s one guy on there who seems to be a bit of a guru on these, even down to keeping a database of model numbers!

Ive used Metal Goods when I purchased unequal alloy angle for my bench top.

I’ll still call up one day mate if you don’t mind as there’ll deffo be knowledge you can impart on me. Haven’t a clue regarding speeds for mild/stainless/non ferrous/plastics etc and what cutters I need to buy or the technique when using them and calculating thread dims etc.......plus I need an excuse to check out the flat tracker (and the Italian exotica!)

That box is home made, missing a lot of parts, I doubt he'll know anything about it, but never say never!

You might spot me on there in the atlas section, by a different name..

Looking at this pic you can see how the box slides onto the bed from the left, with the output shaft bearing lining up with the lead screw, and the change gear bracket falling into place like normal.

There would have been a stub shaft to connect it up to replace the original reversing box, but there were a few different types of lead screw so it may have been the intent to use another type off a longer Atlas.

The standard cast gear cover end plate would have to be removed, and I'm not sure if the part sticking out hooks inside the bed way under the headstock, and one of the fixing screws from the reversing box could be threaded into it. It certainly looks that way to me.

I’ll have a look tomorrow. I was fixated on the fact the lead screw lever and reversing gear was identical and thinking it would live in the same place but what you say makes sense, also the gear cluster bracket would swap out with the existing one.

i think it also has another adaption to fasten it to the lathe bed as well

So, I met up with @Arc Tourist tiday to pick up the small indexing tool post. Nice to meet you Mike, many thanks and it’s currently fitted and all’s good. If even indexes once loose enough.
Managed to change out my 3 jaw for the Bernerd 4 jaw, clock it the mount a scabby Z650 rear hub, took a little ovality from the drum, dressed the faces and cleaned up a bad paint job enough to give it a good powdercoat finish along with the rim once I’ve had the chrome stripped off.
