Absolutely mate. You tend to get the scaly bits too where you’ve dragged a bit of parent into it. It’s not easy at all. I find it difficult.

Ok Richard thanks I will keep trying I am only 3 rods in as of yet I have gas brazed before but that's nearly 40years ago whilst at school

I’m not an expert as like yourself I’ve done a lot more with gas than tig but one thing that’s really stood out to me is the cleanliness of the material your joining. Even a ground finish tends to cause it problems. I found I get my cleanest results when the material is machined. And the next best thing ground then linished up to a polished finish. A ground finish alone doesn’t come out as clean a braze for some reason. Dunno why.

Ok Richard. interesting as the first ones I did I ground gently down the edge but the last to I wire brushed the hell out of untill they had a shine to them and they were the better ones

Very interesting thread, I have only dabbled with it once on a lathe casting for a colleague at work, ultimately it cracked after a few months for no other reason I believe that it was done during a lunchbreak, and although heating up wasn't a problem on the workpiece there wasn't enough time to heat down properly, am interested in doing cast stove repairs in the future.
