I am actually quite tempted you try the central heating pump again to see if it is just the same as before or not, would certainly let me know whether the blockage was there right from the start. Even if it did prove to be reasonable I would still return to the procon, just it would satisfy my curiosity.

Is it possible the CH pushed the s**t up there in the first place?
If your gonna do that give it a good swirl out through some pipe work first. Yes it would be nice to know how it works now. There is an old thread on hear where a lovely example of a cooler is made using one of the ch pumps and this was a sucsess. Sadly there are failures too with them which is a shame as they are very easy and cheap to get hold of.

There is an old thread on hear where a lovely example of a cooler is made using one of the ch pumps and this was a sucsess. Sadly there are failures too with them which is a shame as they are very easy and cheap to get hold of.

The pump was new but also it was used for an hour at least just pumping water through a 10mm OD pipe back into the tank , the outlet is about 70mm above the bottom of the tank so really it should not suck up anything unless it is suspended in the water. If I still have the fittings I made for the CH Pump I will give it a go, if not I probably wont as even though it will only take me 2mins to make a new adapter(have the code in the CNC) it will just be wasting some Alu, will see tomorrow if I make it to the workshop.

I remember when I first got the torch I tried to blow through it to double check that the power connection hose was the water return, I had never used a water cooled torch so wasn't certain although it was red in colour where the other two hoses were blue and black so I figured it was that way.
Ok so when I tried to blow through I nearly killed myself and I could not get any discernible amount of air out.
I have just tried and although it took a fair amount of puff to get the water blown through the 50ft of hose, once done I could blow relatively easily through and could detect it coming out the red power cable/tube.

Had that gone into a production shop and been just slapped on the cooler it would of suffered quickly with only a tiny amount of water getting round.
It would put unwanted pressure on the pump and motor too.

Yes and to think it had a QC label on it with Checked by.......
As I said I can't be 100% certain but I am fairly confident that my memory isn't so bad that I am not remembering from a month or so back
If they hooked it up at all then maybe as long as there was water coming out they passed it, suppose it depends how rigorous their tests actually are.

Hi hood, if you were to open the handle of the torch you'd find they silver solder the fittings for the lines onto the torch head on the parweld torches, I would imagine that is the source of your blockage.
At least that's how they were done on the parweld watercooled torch I had.

Yes they are certainly soldered, whether silver solder I don't know but if you know then that is almost certainly what the blockage was.

Ok so just finished trying the central heating pump, same as before, same pressure (approx 8PSI), same flowrate (approx 400mL/min) so the blockage was having no effect on it. It seems the CH pump can produce the volume but not the pressure so when it flows through the small pipes the flow drops as the pressure is maintained at the same value as it was when in the 8mm bore pipe I tried initially.
The CH pumps all state a pressure of up to 10Bar, how they arrive at that figure I have no idea but it, in my mind, must rely on a head of water where mine has virtually none to speak of.


I would imagine the flow would now be suitable with the Chinese pump as it has the pressure. Not going to try it as I can't really be bothered and others have shown that it works fine anyway.

The procon will be the pump I will use

ch pump pressure works from a good head of water.
It needs a consistent gravity feed to work at its best. They don't draw very well at all. 10 bar is optimistic though.

Only today i was looking at a tig on eBay with a ch pump as a cooler fed from a plastic dust bin stood on wooden frame. Might just give enough head.

I mean they may claim it's tested but chances are it won't of been done under water pressure.

I think why they give the value as "Up to" is because it will depend on the head so could be nothing could be 10 bar mine is basically screwed into the bottom of a tank so technically only 150mm or so head of water.
Looking at the one @WorkshopChris has linked to, it may be all that is needed, a meter or so to give enough pressure, I suppose there must be numbers available on the net showing what the pressure would be for a given head and as the water basically flows through these CH pumps there will only be a slight increase in that when they are running.

As your a man with a lathe you could fit a fan blade on the motor shaft sticking out the back.

No shaft sticking out the back of this motor, just a slotted shaft barely protruding from the back bearing. Yes I could easily make something up to fit a balde on but much easier just to fit one to the outside of the present cooler as it already has the cutout for one

Like so but instead of using it as a fan for the rad like this person you could turn it round and use it to cool the motor.

More than powerful enough. You would need to reduce that quite abit and fit a 12v supply

Yes, that is what I was meaning by Chinese pump. I tried one after I tried the CH pump and it was an improvement. I had to put a diverter valve in to reduce the pressure as it was way over 100PSI but with doing so the flow was then reduced to, if I recall 800ml/min. I have no doubt whatsoever though that if I now tried it with the blockage in the pump removed that it would work great but as I now have the procon I will use that as it is certainly a lot quieter than the Chinese pump and no need for a 12v power supply.
