Yeah, plenty. I don’t care, I have issues with authority.
Having said that, I will need “regulation” railings when I have visitors - with children in tow. Most of the time it will need to be clear because it is a really handy workspace. I have a design in mind….

I better spit it out before “my idea” is second guessed.
I'm going to have a drawer pull railing. Either one single unit or two along the length. The railing will pull out from underneath then flip up 90 degrees. Thus the top of the railing will look a lot like the existing long support beam and stow away flush with it (very important for bench purposes!).
I pull that out with the railings attached. Once they are fully extended the entire railing can pivot up before it falls into a slot locking it in the up position.
I’ll start working on a Sketchup….

When I get around to it...
While I was dreaming it up, it occurred to me that it will have length and therefore railing height restrictions. I don't want anything poking out beyond existing front so the locking mechanism will have to be tucked away underneath, probably bolted to the fenceposts. It will need some sort of dogleg to do it, to reach around the top rail.
If it can be pulled out by hand, then coming up with a mechanism to flip it up would be super easy, then I just need some sort of actuator and there's plenty of room under there. I have a feeling the first iteration will be two halves and all wooden construction except possibly the locking part which will beed to be a very solid steel construction solidly mounted.

FWIW there a flat area outside my house that has a slightly higher drop off and no railings. And yes I've fallen off it, just the once, and I've still no intention of putting up railings.
Can't be too careful, if it saves one life, think of the children etc etc.

My view is it's best not to draw attention to things...mine has a nice regulation height rail with regulation spindle spacing.
It only takes one complaint...then the council will ask about planning and you're into a load of unnecessary hassle.

Severely weakened as I am by this man flu, I managed to find a pen and paper. The top handrail is part of the bench in normal use. Could incorporate a mid rail too.

I could go all James Bond with it but I am now considering the possibility of a collapsible full length stairstep. I'd sitll have the option of using the giant workbench, it could convert into a floor and/or long bench seat. Probably only need a couple of steps to bring it up to code.
