Your optrel is not a crystal. They smash, known issue.

You do TIG welding mostly at a bench or in a workshop I’m guessing.

I’m not hard on my gear, my two Speedglas 9100s are 3 & 4 years old.

I just do actual proper welding work. Which like it or not, an optrel is not up to.

great for a bit of workshop work, they would not survive being in the back of a van, and used 10 hours a day.

We have, and I don't call 10m up in a cherry picker, benchwork! They get used where needed, be that with my head trapped in a spaceframe or hanging off a ladder

I’ve 3 Optrel lids, they all share the same components bar the Screen, and probably they are all the same bar the brains.
So what have you had break on them?

I use to put the welding helmet in the shelf only once I finished working
For this reason it has a lot of scratches caused by miss measurements
Making it simple , welding helmet up and me trying sticking my head somewhere

Today i went on another trek out and cam back with the Denbigh donkey saw and 5 builders sand bags of timber for a mate with a log burner round the corner and various trolleys.

And to mount other stuff - on my C13 I have the collet box and its stalk mounted there, and the oil tank as mine's a later pumped-oil version. I *think* the rarer than hen's teeth profiling / tracer attachments mount there as well, probably a few other even rarer accessories, Holbrook nade some interesting hardware long before most of the other makers.

Yes it's a nice bit of kit. Will definitely have to do something about the colour. Not sure on its original but it will definitely get changed

My bench linisher has turned up and came with a spare belt and some round sanding discs.



The belt fitted [it's not as bad as it looks in the pic, I suspect it's been used for wood-bothering and that's why it looks knackered] and the spare are 60 grit - the red ones [ no idea what they're called ]. Would there be any advantage in getting zirconia ones like these and/or of a different grade i.e do they perform significantly better? I'll be mostly using it for metal and the [very] occasional lump of wood.

Zirconium belts are head and shoulder above aluminium oxide. I’d price up ceramic as well, might be a little pricey, but hold an edge even better than zirc

I’ve got one of these (Clarke branded). Don’t be too enthusiastic with its use, they eat material.

Currently I’m on a 120 grit belt, well worn and probably past it’s best. It bevelled the edge on the marking knifes I made a few weeks ago

I had a suicidal pheasant headbutt a headlight at maximum airspeed velocity as I was coming the other way, it broke an inch-long rack in the headlight leveller, not available on its own as a spare part of course, had to have the whole headlamp assembly in those pre-3D printer days, luckily it was a company car - £800 including labour removing most of the front end to change it

Oh for the days of sealed beams, choice of 7" or 5", round or square.

Yes it is a vw lt35 and my mate has one in his yard but someone has already took all the lights off it.

I once fitted a brand new headlight in a golf as well as a few other jobs on a customers car, when I was test driving the car I hit a crow doing 60mph and smashed the brand new headlight we cleaned all the blood and feathers off it, stuck it back in the box and warranty claimed it as broken on delivery

I once had a pheasant commit suicide when I was driving my old Sprinter, it had a large luton that came close to the cab roof, about 3 weeks after the incident I thought there was a bit of a smell, you can guess where the stupid bird had ended up...….. took an hour with a steam cleaner to clean it out, even then...…..

Hit a pheasant in a Rover 820, I could just see its head flopping about in the middle of the bonnet as I slowed down. The bloody thing bent the bonnet, smashing both head lights, bent the top and bottom valance causing both rads to fracture and creased both wings. I thought they would write it off, But they repaired it
