And a heavier and longer crane:
Moved out of the elderly Daf and now back to doing it Swedish style. Much better motor, in fact it's chalk and cheese compared to the Daf, 60 ton/metre crane and a double extending trailer. Apart from the trial of having to find new homes for all my personal kit, sort out all the lifting gear, board out some of the trailer chassis for extra storage, and get to grips with yet another make of crane, all of which will take at least a couple of weeks, I'm looking forward to going to work next week, more so than I have for a while...

scania and daf are complete different ball parks like fiat and Mercedes

Par for the course for me, just got the trailer sorted and they give me another one
.After nigh-on 6 months, driving her I admitted defeat with the elderly Daf on Wednesday. At 20 years old and not having been loved for the last few of them, fixing constant breakdowns (and yes, I know that was beyond my remit, but the engineer and old school driver attitude in me couldn't sit back and wait for repair men charging silly money to appear) and the frustration of wondering what would go wrong next became too much for me, so I called the office and told them that I'd had enough and if they couldn't give me a reliable wagon, not new just reliable, I'd have to look for another job. And yes, I realise that it's a first world problem. I fully appreciate that many people are a lot worse off than me, but when you're having it 24 hours a day, 5-6 days a week, it begins to grate on your nerves.
My comments weren't a threat, simply me trying to retain what's left of my sanity, but to the immense credit of the company, they got back to me today and gave me the keys to this one. There are brand new motors coming soon, but I'm more than happy with this one, and the company are happy that I'm happy, so everyone is, err, happy
. Scanias are head and shoulders above Dafs in all respects, in my opinion, there's more room in the cab, more power, it's better fitted out, and it's a smoother ride to boot. And the bonus is that my OH is happy as well. My frustration had lead to me moaning to her quite a lot, which she didn't want or need to hear, so this has put that problem to bed

You sod, I’ve just got back on general haulage doing chipboard and fertiliser until harvest kicks off hopefully, so up and down the A1 at all gods hours looking for a weird Yorkshireman in a DAF and I’d managed to memorise your Reg! Now that’s ballsed it all up! Glad you’re happy again though
Is that Eejits old motor? Pass him on a regular basis, seen one of the DAFs a few times this week, but it wasn’t you, unless you’re built like a house?
And I completely forgot that this arrived today:
The steelworks have decided that we now have to wear a face mask when loading, despite all loading taking place under an open to the elements canopy where katabatic winds howl through on their way from the Polar ice cap. After a modest set-to with them after I arrived for loading without a mask because no-one had told me I needed one, and they refused to accept a towel wrapped round my face, I decided to basically take the proverbial and wear something seriously over the top. Might go the whole hog next and start wearing a visor and a complete bio suit

The previous driver was a s/e Polish lad who was paid off when Corona virus was invented, so the wagon has been parked up at Johnson's yard in Scunny most of the time. It's been taken out a few times by a few drivers, but mainly by local guy who used to drive a hiab wagon for the now defunct C and C transport and came here after they shut down and sold their motors to Somerscales, so as you can imagine, the interior is in need of some elbow grease
