I got this rather nice J&S 8146 knurling tool

What I don't understand is how they work out their numbering.

I've an 8145 the same size, so when I bought another 8146 recently I didn't expect this

Just a little too large for the Boxford.

You will most likely find that the 8146 is the registered patented drawing number . I'm not envious not one iota ( BSTD !

I actually prefer imperial for machining, probably just because it's what I've been using for years but I used a metric lathe at uni and in my head I was converting everything to thousandths.

Someonr told me that inches are actually more accurate, as if you take an inch you divide it by 64, and if you take the same length in mm you get 25.4, which halved you get 50.8... already at your smallest readable (on a ruler anyway) unit you’re looking at 50.8 divisions vs 64 divisions... anyway, both systems have their merits. I find carpentry easier in imperial, makes more sense to me

I usually measure from the 4" mark on a steel rule to avoid the 64ths divisions, too many lines there.

... and that's entirely reasonable. I completely understand that some people prefer imperial as they're more familiar with it, I was just taken aback a little by the assertion that it's more accurate because of the spacing of lines on a ruler.

Maybe I'm strange but I can work in imperial or metric and generally pick to suit the job. i.e. if I'm making something to fit a part that is old enough to have been made to imperial dims, then I work in imperial and vice-versa. Makes life easier, especially if you are picking-up existing bolt holes or similar.

A new toy just arrived...

1 micron per division, my next best indicator has 1 ten thousandths divisions so for me, metric is now more accurate (or technically precise) .

Keeping the belt correctly tensioned & not chucking massive shovels of sand or ballast into the side area of a partly filled barrel tends not to see things end up like that , once the belt start to slip it heats the pulley up and as you can see it ain't good for the plastic once it heats up & tears loose .

Overloaded or heavy unbalanced mixes most likely caused failure on the mixer motor, but a "plastic" armature shaft mated to a steel pulley, it boggles the mind.

Cheers, it's been a brain fryer of a week but it's a qualification I've wanted for the last 10+ years, just never got round to doing it. To be fair to the older chaps the 2391 of today is easier than it was back in the days of the original one.
