1 micron per division, my next best indicator has 1 ten thousandths divisions so for me, metric is now more accurate (or technically precise) .

Well, in fairness it probably applies to that very nice instrument but the only thing you really know about it is the resolution. Resolution is the smallest movement it will display. Precision is how closely it repeats it's readings. Accuracy is the difference between the movement shown and the movement made.

It's only about 8 years ago that the length of a metre was standardized & set in stone ..something to do with frequencies & light travelled

IIRC The yard was set a couple of centuries ago and a gold bar was made to the length it was dimensioned when the gold was 60 oF ( the gold standard ?)

In the late 1970's we were getting brand new still quality, Britool tools with only the makers model number on which was very useful .

A few years ago I got fed up with walking around mini engines, rover 2l, vauxhall 16v and k series lumps. So I made a whole load of racking out of scrap wood and scaffolding tubes, so now they're all around the walls. Still don't have any room...

Was given this the other day, it was described to me as a:
"Car, or lorry Valve seat cutting tool, it was his Grandfathers and must be worth a lot. As it is an antique, will MIS be able to make money from it?"

Yes, it is a cutting tool, a seat cutting tool. But for taps.

It doesn't move at all, but is sharp.




I will clean it up and MIS will sell it on, but not for much funds.

So are tap seats. If you look closely at the tapered adaptor you can see that it is threaded. This is so that it can start and grip in different sized taps, from small basin ones to the larger globe style.

Taps these days have ceramic seats so you couldn't recut them if you wanted to.
