Not a daft question. It's for testing the strength of concrete blocks, cubes, cores and cylinders. Basically if you have poured concrete or cut some out of an old structure and need to know that it is making its design strength/is strong enough for what you want to do this is what you use.

I read an article re rally cars and evidently the "works" were known to acid dip the bare shell to reduce the weight. I guess the life expectancy wasn't that long.
