I know it won't get much heat in there, but owts better than nowt. It's as much for keeping it steady under the weight of the flue pipe, and a bed of sand will be a nice thing for burning wood. Saves me farting about fitting any type of grate/plate in there if I just fill it with sand.
for stability weld some L shape brackets on and bolt it down
if you are burning wood you dont need a grate
freecycle ebay gumtree etc and keep an eye out for an old night storage heater and stack the bricks around the back and sides of the heater
