Are the Hellerman boots better than heatshrink? Certainly more expensive.

The Hellerman boots are very flexible and good for things like welding leads, somewhere the cable isn't pulled about too much I don't suppose it would make much difference. I will be using them for a very long time because I bought a bucket load of them cheap in a sale.

Yes, they are white metal bearings,
I have adjusted them, scraping and shims etc, they are a lot better,
I think replacement parts may be the easier way to go,
Spindle and bearings, bed, lead screw,

I think you cannot buy just the bearings any more, you have to buy bearings & a new spindle as a set and they're not cheap!

Yes I have look into this,
Though it is surprising what can be done with some shim, even tin foil, to tighten the bearing.
I do not know whether the white metal bearings would re-shape/deform tighter around the spindle (they have quite thick side walls) with the caps fitted, more than likely not, tighter top and bottom maybe, but not in all directions, if you know what I mean.
The spindle shaft seems better now I have messed with, time will tell.
There are other worn parts that may improve its performance

My first Henry, FB dealer in Bedford, refurb with new accessories & warranty, thought £60 was pretty good. Not sure how long I can hide it in the shed before it gets nicked for the house!



Did a load of fence trellis replacement, 3" PZ2 screws, the usual bundled bits that come with carp tools skipped loads even tho all piloted, bought a set of Wera - loads better

Needs must in my case, too; couldn't transport a whole sheet anyway.

Going to be 'interesting' when we go back to school in a couple of weeks... before the holiday started we were getting low on timber and suppliers have told us that they have no stock of the pine board we buy (and cut to size for all the different years and projects) so may be teaching practical woodworking without any wood!

Probably some rules against it nowadays, splinters and rats pee and the likes. I read somewhere there's a shortage of pallets too.

The precioussssss:



Two pieces of spring steel sheet, the smaller piece 3mm thick, is relatively easy to find and a couple of suppliers have stock. The 5mm stuff is Unicorn Poo. This is CR70 which means you can machine it then temper it and make your spring. Being 5mm means you can also machine it into odd shapes and thicknesses. This has taken me a while to obtain. Not the cheapest stuff to buy either, well over £100.

White metal bearings can be melted down and repoured. You can then scrape them in, a thankless task I'm sure.

A highly skilled job, not for the faint of heart. I remember a couple of guys coming down to replace the bearings on our big Ammonia compressor, they were there for a couple of days and my father couldn't talk for days after he paid the bill :-)
Obviously this isn't nearly so big or so dangerous but you do need the skillset.

Casting the bearings isn't that difficult. There are videos showing the process. Dave Richards, "The Old Steam Powered Workshop," is one to look for. But you then need to machine them in situ.
