It's been in a large plastic tub Carlsten, for about seven years. I think I put bits of brick in the bottom of the pot..

I went for a long shopping run to aldi, 5km there and 12km back.

Two digital callipers. Gave them a quick check in shop and they appear acceptable, possibly better than my old old ones. The previous 4 from lidl/aldi were bent as bannanas and went straight back. If they are as good (checked on gauge blocks) I will retire my old one from shed and modify it.

Edit - the new callipers are slightly different, the yellow button swaps to display circumference. Nice extra feature that I will use.

I gave most away, before I got pictures.
Mainly drills, screwdrivers, hammers and odd and sods.
Not use to me, but a local MIS did well.

Quick comparison, they all measure near dead on. Jaws are not perfect but close enough. One is a bit short, has a max of 150.34mm when it hits the stop.
Feel, a little scratchy, not half as smooth as my mitutoyos but same as the old pair.

Never seen the allure of buying cheap tat. They never work properly for very long and quite frankly,I wouldnt trust them. Would land up checking whatever I measure with a decent quality one anyway,so what is the point?

But to some people , especially when starting out on a limited budget, it's not cheap tat.

Do you know how to carry out a proper inspection on them?

Have you got a gauge ball or gauge pin?

I’ve a few pairs of the Lidl ones about. One gets used for setting out. I know that’s abusing it but at the price Got a couple of pairs in the truck. If I want to know how big something is whenI’m out and about it’s to the nearest mm or 0.5mm anyway usually. Cheap enough not to worry about but good enough to do.

Decent mitotoyu don’t leave the workshop

Indeed, and it depends on what you're doing with it. I have one of the Workzone ones, but I'm not using it for very accurate work, just where it's easier than using a ruler for example measuring the diameter of something, and while I've read several times about how to use a manual* vernier I can never bring it to mind when I need it. I imagine to someone doing proper engineering work the accuracy wouldn't be sufficient, but for what I do with it, I can't justify the cost of a proper one. My manual vernier has "Mitutoyo" written on it, looks very nice, cost me £5, but doesn't get as much use as the digital one.

Interesting to read about how people are checking them for accuracy and so on.

Strictly speaking, the correct terms are probably "digital caliper" and "vernier caliper", with the vernier one being what you refer to as "analogue". A lot of people use the term "digital vernier" to mean "digital caliper", which isn't likely to be true (although it's possible that some digital calipers use vernier tracks to give absolute readings, most are incremental measurements that track movement in order to provide an absolute measurement).

I generally buy one new mitutoyo every year. The old one goes for general use and the old general use goes to marking out

That's a bit like my jeans - they start off smart, get down graded to casual, then down graded again to workshop, then finally after 'rolling around on the floor in oil' jobs they go in the bin

But if that’s all you need…

I’m not getting mitotoyu, old or otherwise, covered in slurry when I’m measuring a hydraulic fitting on a tractor when it’s either going to be A,B or C so measuring to 0.001mm at tool room tolerance isn’t necessary.

Just a different way to do things I suppose.
