I dont mind the knotters, its all mechanical so you can see any wear or broken bits rather than this lift arm which seems to rely on pot luck! any breakdown is worse when its in the field which it always is!

So its this, the part I showed the picture of is sandwiched between those 2 big washers on the left of the shaft, as the hay is stuffed into the chamber it turns that big angry spiky wheel that turns the shaft and the roller im replacing, the arm above it is tight against the roller so as it turns it lifts the arm up, when it reaches a set point your bale is done, the problem is the friction between the roller and arm or lack of friction so hope fully this should sort us! every year I keep looking at it thinking of betters ways to do it but you need a field of hay to test the ideas!

Our JD baler has a knurled steel centre in between those washers. It works well enough, there is loads of tension on the trip arm so it's pretty accurate. I'd say once you replace that piece it should be right as rain...

Watch out for shortness of breath , loads of fine white frothy milky sputum , chest hurting , feeling faint & a lump in either groin , seems you have a fair chance of getting blood clot after such an operation . Mine was close to being fatal , it appeared almost three weeks after the event . Nobody told me of the common blood clot risks or what the symptoms were .

I've used this surgeon a few times in the past and he's somehow managed to keep me walking...
I'll be sure to check my groin regularly though!

Baler Knotters are Dark Magic...

Baler twine - posh blue stuff - from my grandad - supplied us with washing lines, gate hinges, parcel strapping, go-cart steering, shoe laces, belts for years as kids . . . slumming it with some old common red stuff at the moment

@dobbslc , it's frightening the number of wrong legs (for example) that have been amputated by simple error.

Everyone gets tired and makes mistakes.

I 'd have been concerned about the removal of unmarked ( now in a higher voice ) swellings too

I was faced with the task of being able to hold and drive cutters that didn't fit the already abundant equipment that came with the Arboga.

Here it would have been very welcome if the solution found this time could also be applied to the small Myfords.


After some consideration, I decided on an MT2-M10 collet chuck set ER40/472E, without expulsion flap on the cone.

On a Myford, the collet holder is secured by means of a tie rod.

After only a few attempts on the ML7, I am already enthusiastic about these collets:
Not only is there a certain repeatability when unclamping and reclamping, you can also get to the back of a workpiece again if you have already cut a thread on it and can clamp it safely on that with a little care - nice!


The question now was how to attach these MT2 holders to the Arboga with MT3, which, as you know, has no device for a tightening bar?

The combined wisdom of two YT videos, THIS and THIS, some parts and a bit of my own work brought the solution:

- open adapter sleeves MT3/MT2 without internal thread can be bought for little money;
- the union nut M62x1.25 I cut from aluminium AlCuMgPb rounds;
- the screw-in expulsion tabs of size MT3 but with the M10 thread for MT2 I cut, turned and milled in different length from 11SMn30+C;
- the insertable locking washer I constructed on the PC and had it laser-cut from free-cutting steel and reworked it accordingly:

The union nut is only loosely attached to the threaded piece here.

And ready to mill:

The ER40 collet holder has its own key and two parallel surfaces 46mm apart for counterholding.
For spanner size 46 I only had a ring spanner with a 900mm tube to tighten the lock nuts on the Unimog FL4 front loader.

Of course, that didn't help here, so I had to use the largest adjustable spanner we have at first - a bit unwieldy!

Fortunately, we now also have a 46mm open-ended spanner, which makes life a lot easier.

And so it goes on and on ....

My friend of 17 yrs is not retiring ,but cannot afford to run his local old fashion ironmongery shop due to screaming local council taxation demands , so he's carrying on from store sheds elsewhere & on line .
Earlier today I spent hours on line looking for a 250 mm Dia , 30 mm hole , 40 toothed tungsten ripping blade .

All the usual suspects cheapest single blade s are £29 inc. vat & 3-5 days or more waiting for delivery to click & collect from their nearest shop .
Postage would have been at least £7 or more with a round trip of about £10 in diesel. His shop is 2.3 miles away & I was passing it anyway .


Here's what I got for £11 . 00 and it's for two cheap blades not just one . I only want to rip three seasoned oak planks 30 mm x 186 x 2005 mm long in length for a project ... can't be bad

All the ones I ever worked on had a knurled steel centre too. It's been a long time, isn't the arm spring loaded?

I had that in reverse when I was going for employment as a food factory machinery commissioning engineer . His nibs said, "Draw me a three phase contactor switch " so I drew the schematic , he wanted me to sketch what one looked like .. " .

I'm so glad I didn't take up their offer ..they folded two months later

It's so cute and tiny! Not bad for a tenner on amazon, blade is even tapered and ground on top/bottom edge so the clamp pulls it in tight.

Hopefully it’s not like the one I had years ago . Looks very generic . Sheared the shaft off twice under warranty. Third time I told them where they could shove it. Dismally under specced shaft diameter with a soft start that did naught.
