Picked up a spool of gasless wire and saw this stuff. There was a choice of water based or oil based. What are they for and what's the difference?

Anti spatter spray it Stops welding spatter from sticking to your mole grips, clamps ect.

Just back from a very pleasant holiday in France. I'm not one for souvenirs (unless you count the lovely Breton Cider ), but I did take advantage of being in a civilised country and popped into a DIY store to pick up a few measuring thingies, all completely unadulterated by Boris' bulls**t units:

Even in France, it's surprisingly hard to find rule(r)s (like the Stanley one in the picture) with whole millimetres on both edges of one side and half-millimetres on both edges of the other side. The Facom Dela ones are the only available-in-the-UK ones I've found like that. The Axminster ones are nearly as good (whole millimetres on one edge of one side and half-millimetres on t'other but when you flip it over, the edges are swapped), but it's much more convenient to decide whether you want millimetres or half millimetres and then use whichever edge is easiest, rather than flipping the ruler over repeatedly. Me? Fussy about rulers? Never!

Brother came over from Sweden last week. Asked him to bring the same. And a couple of folding rules. Zollstock in Germany, no idea what they’re called here but hard to find.

Especially all in metric. Same with tapes.

Two croc clips with solid conductor feed wires attached & cut off to 20 mm legs , then held in the vice by the legs .. cost about 35 p , weight..... two crock clips & 40 mm of solid conductor wire .
The alternative is 300 to 600 mm of rubber coated thick plant tie wire bend it in half wrap 50 mm round each wire and bring the wires together then shove the loop that's left some where to hold it . Beauty of this one is the rubber covered wire can be used for hundreds of other things as well .

It's held in the toolpost and pushed into the work with the cross slide. It does impose a lot of strain on the headstock bearings.

I have similar ..In my ancient 1943 lather with taper roller bearings I've found the best results with little strain on the head stock bearing is to put the RMP very slow and feed in 1 thou or less every 20 to 30 seconds till you get the depth definition you require . Make a note of the feed dial reading so you get the rest the same depth if you are extending the knurling along the bar or rod

Setting the centre of the yoke/ cutters to chuck centre height matters alot , the closer you get it the better the knurling becomes . I used a deheaded fine pointed darning needle in the tailstock chuck to set mine up in the QCTP

If you need to extend the knurling along the bar/rod it's a simple case of withdraw then move along & align so the wheel is just catching the first two rows of knurling and start the slow refeeding again & repeat till you have the lenght of knurling you require . done this with stainless bar , alu , steel & brass without problem .

I suspect the slow RPM , gentle tool insertion feed rate as well as accurate setting up is why for high speed industrial applications these " bump type knurler's " are not so good

Yeah, I know the distinction (hence typing "rule(r)s" in my post), but it's one I've never been willing to get worked up about...

I was looking at that soldering tool trying to work out what it was for and whether I was missing out!

Now i get it....but I just use heat shrink solder joiners when doing car stuff....basically can be done with one hands and a heat gun as they solder and shrink all in one....which is perfect for me as I always used to forget to feed on the heat shrink until I'd finished the joint!

Today I acquired hay-fever! one of the pig pens we arent using was 4 foot tall with thistles and weed so wanted to knock it flat before it goes to seed, guess who forgot to take a hay-fever tablet...

Found out a fortnight ago that the sudden acute screaming itchy weeping rash & hives attack that I had on 17 March this year looked like king sized nettle rashes all over me save for my JT . is histamine related .

Running along with it was a 999 event , a crazy shortness of breath. The Para Medic & two ambulance crew were not able to help initially , till a few hours later after lots of smart phone searching for data , he asked if I'd ever had Urticaria. Which means I'm producing far too much histamine .

He suggested I try taking some antihistamine , thankfully we had a pack left by my daughter with a use by date of 30 / 6 . 2023 .
Two tablets & it's disappearing in the next half hour , having two more every four hours & 8 hrs later it's all gone save for hundreds of goose pimple sized bumps all over me . Subsequent blood tests confirmed it . I'm now on a course of pharmaceutical antihistamines for six months then a month break then back to the dermatologist , with new blood test results .

What you have posted ties in well with the sileage making , high levels of birch , oak & grass pollen that been happening , that helps me a lot , thanks for posting .
