I started reading this but my first thought was why does he need strimmers and hedge trimmers etc living that far north? Surely nothing grows enough to need cutting

As for them wanting it all back I'd tell them it's in the front garden, then when the courier turns up and it's gone just shrug

Years ago we bought a good quality shower set and it turned up in a couple of days, great, then another one turned up a few days later! We called and emailed but they couldn't seem to grasp what we told them

Got a couple of BNC sockets in the post. Perfect fit in the scanner. Soldered in just now. Needs a blob of threadlock on the nut. Thinking I don't need to run a fly lead from the ground tab as the grey metal plate it goes through will already be so (grounded).

A friend mentioned that a local charity shop had a boxed Moore & Wright Micrometer for £15, I said provided the anvil faces were not corroded to take it for me.

There is some corrosion on the od of the 2 test pieces, the 2 and 3 inch test pieces are missing.

For a repair I need a tap for a trapezoidal thread Tr.16x3mm - in the entire Evil Bay I found only one offer that did not come from China:

(Unfortunately, I had to order the screw tap for the same dimension Tr.16x3mm in China. )


Since it was a supplier with one-time shipping costs for no matter how many items, I looked around a bit more in his offers .... and found something I wasn't even looking for:

Belzer brake line spanners in 1/4 and 5/16
- Belzer for me, by the way, is the absolute crowning glory of German hand tools (a company whose high quality was their undoing).

Another spanner marked "Belzer Vanadium extra" in extra thin - I'm a bit sceptical, although the quality seems to be ok - in 11/32" and 5/16".

A Brittool ring-jaw spanner, as I think you hold in quite high esteem.

And a wrapped Facom ring-jaw spanner in 1/2" is also included, about which I hear: used to be top-notch, now not so much?!?

So that takes care of this part of Europe.

All spanners seem to be unused.


I am very pleased, I can make good use of all these sizes.

Sure, you don't need that, because you'll go from here via a coax-cable up in your house IIRC, so both poles are been taken care of.

Don't skimp on the coaxial cable - no RG58 or - even worse - TV or satellite cable, the losses are too high on these frequencies!


Later, close to the antenna - if you know what you're using - you can consider whether an "electrical counterweight" is useful - it's not about earthing, protective earthing or even lightning protection, it's more about balancing to improve reception performance.

However, this is not as important for reception as it would be for transmission.

Check the continuity from the socket to the ground on the PCB if the bracket is aluminium it could be anodised and have an insulating coating on it, necessitating a ground connection from the ring tag under the nut.

You are absolutely right!

However, he might find RG213 a bit unwieldy ....

I used to use a lot of Ecoflex10

when it needed to be a bit thinner and more flexible.

In the meantime there are new cables like Airborne10

and AircomPremium

....

Abrasive wheels chappie said you don’t need 110 in a fixed installation in a workshop. It’s only for temporary power. So in a workshop you can use 240?

Never heard that one before…….

It’s a course you’re supposed to do over here to show you’re competent to use grinders and grinding machines. Every few years you need to redo it.

There will be an equivalent in Germany! It may be the land of chocolate but it’s also the land of paperwork
