107 years ago my grandad went over the top in a battle at Krithia. I am gradually tracing the steps of his war so I bought this to that end. Its a fascinating subject made all the more so when you have a personal connection to the history.

A few zoro items. About half order missing, not on delivery note. No emails or tracking so no idea.
The level was shipped on its own in a thin clingfilm type wrap so has dints and burrs from postage. However it will be useable and can I complain for a fiver? (Not worth the effort with them!)

I weighed some brass and copper in at me favourit scrap yard this morning " john " always lets me have a mooch around for bits before he coughs up

the threaded bar is M14 and 1.2 m so some idea of the tube size x 3 lengths . then said do you want this

A record 92 1/2 C mounted on a bit 2" x 2" frame

the Jaws are still sharp and he never knocked anything of me scrap he'd already wrote the cheque !
Happy days . the amount of decent/new stuff getting weighed in is criminal !

Bearings are shot, and covered in crap.


Had some deep grove in stock, so fitted them. Just the tang to remake now

Since I've been on the forum with you, I've noticed how often I miss the right terminology in connection with mechanics.

And the well known online help sites are none either: colloquial language more or less good, technical language almost inevitably bad.

So it was a good thing that my favorite online antiquriat had these titles on offer for almost no money:

Sometimes you have to deal with really unpleasant types, who you don't want to leave simply because they have something that you would like to have - then you just have to get through it.

In this case, I wanted this dirty, loveless offered and poorly described piece, because a friend had recently found a copy with similar quick clamping mechanism, which came from a very reputable manufacturer ....

Remarkably, both the specimen in question and that of my friend had the foremost pull-down tab cut off - a possible conclusion:
Only users of smaller milling and surface grinding machines wanted this one-hand quick-clamping system and for their tables the factory-made ones were too long?!?!?

After tough and rather unpleasant negotiations by mail and phone and with some delay, the thing finally came to me ... exactly as filthy as probably kept there for many years ....

... and here the seller had made a mistake: If he had wiped the vice only once lightly, he would have seen the manufacturer's logo and I would not have gotten the sweetie at this price

As I had hoped, the vice turned out to be a Röhm product - but as naturally as it was shipped dirty, just as naturally it could not function in the form it was delivered:

The claws of the operating lever had nothing to grip into, the central bolt had only a solid disc without any engagement.

So: I made a new one

... and it works ...

... it now clamps with a force that I would not have thought possible for such a patent ...

I will soon be making some other different clamping jaws.

And just as one sometimes encounters unpleasant people, it sometimes happens that one cannot believe one's luck at how nice and obliging some contemporaries are.

I have realised for some time that I need a fixed place with a clean, very flat plane to be able to measure workpieces and tools more accurately.

Also, the need for spotting skills will come my way. However, I don't have the space and don't want to spend the money on a granite measuring table AND a spotting plate, so for a start I've been looking for something in the middle that I can still lift if need be (and that must be able to be shipped if necessary).

I ended up with an old scraped steel plate for little money from the GDR, bought from a local resident who lived as far away from me as possible and who initially didn't want to send it.

Then he did it this way, without us having made any arrangements about packing:

Not only was the cardboard packaging and padding of the best kind, but he had also carpentered a cradle made of strong plywood especially for the spotting plate (only one consignor here from the forum has done something similar so far).



There was a lot of dirt in the surface and in some places a veil of rust - after honing with a lot of oil and an fine Arkansas stone, it looked much better.

Did a little welding job for my brother yesterday and was having issues with burn back into the nozzle accompanied by some vibrations in the torch.

Turns out the liner was to blame. Seeing as the 3m MB25 torch on the MIG always seemed a little short I got a 4m replacement from a local welding supplies

Did you get a couple of new liners for the torch as well? I have spare liners for my two torches one for aluminium welding and one stainless. saves having to stop welding if a liner goes tit sup
