Exciting day... firstly, I acquired a couple of tickets to see Madonna at the O2.
and then got home to find these beauties I picked up from @Nomad had been delivered.

Each sheet is just bigger than the drawers in my spanner cabinet this is the metric drawer, Britool Hallmark combination spanners on the left, standard Britool on the right. That big one may have to live somewhere else, a mate who retired from his HVAC job recently gave it to me.

First cut to size and fit in the drawer, its curling up on the right a bit, should be ok once it has some weight on it.

Next job is to arrange your spanners, just getting a few of may standard Britool out, it reminded me that some are a bit suss, I think only the centre and possibly top one are genuine, the rest counterfeit. Serves me right for buying them a couple at a time on ebay, probably about 10 years ago.

I'm going to put them in sideways to save space. I may just do the Hallmark combination ones to start with and think about these dodgy open ended spanners.

Not sure I'll get any further tonight, its the youngest daughter's 14th tomorrow and she's got friends around on a sleep over trashing the house so got to keep any eye out as the missus is out at a concert with the eldest.

Use carpet spray aerosol glue on the dead side of things to get them to stick in the case/ drawer once you have satisfactorily cut things out.

You can even back fill with glued in cut outs if needed in the future .

in 3 sizes, 0,1 and 2.

I've got a few more coming in the next size up, size up. The price from Power Tools Direct wasn't much more than half decent Chinese handles from ebay, besides, I'm worth it

I have loads of files without handles so will sort them out in the next few weeks. As you can see, I'm in workshop tidying/sorting out mode.

Python Safety File Handles Range

Python safety file handles are designed with a ferrule spun into the wooden handle which, together with a hidden spring, prevents splitting....

They didn't have size 3 so I found some of those on the bay.

I just give em a gentle knock on, they’re not meant to be a permanent fixture? That’s what I was taught anyway

I'm not sure. I've always assumed the temporary/permanent status was down to individual preference? I'd personally prefer permanent.

Good question I think everybody has their own way, I drill the hole so the tang will go in a good way without splitting the handle and give it some welly. Tend to use a long skinny drill all the way, then a bit bigger part of the way etc. I've only resorted to epoxy as a last resort when brute force and swearing hasn't stopped them from dropping off.

@The_Yellow_Ardvark probably has a few tricks.

I just have a few wooden handles of differing sizes and knock them on/off as required, the only “standard” files I’ve seen with permanent handles are the plastic handled sets, though I’ve got a few chainsaw files that came with permanent wooden handles ….even when I was an apprentice we got given files with bare tangs and separate handles so I’ve never known any different. I guess it makes sense now you mention it but I’ve never thought about it before

Got these in the post today - seem to be all the rage at the moment, and as I was considering a set of engineer screw extraction pliers, I thought I'd give these a go instead.

I'm a knipex fan, but must admit I'm slightly disappointed with the quality of the end grind on these. Its a bit on the ****.
I guess I can hit it with the belt sander and square it up but feel I really shouldn’t have to for the price.
Otherwise they seem nice though.

That tang should not be hardened. Anyway, I drill a hole up into the handle which the end of the tang will just fit into. Then I drill another hole over the first to half the length of the tang, at a size the tang would just fit into at half length. Then I put the handle onto the tang, tap it on with a mallet then I bang the tang down on the bench (file vertical) so the weight of the file sets the tang into the hole.

Refitting wooden handles to files etc.

Warm the tang to dull red. Pour powder sulpher into exsisting hole.
Push handle on to tang.
It will smoke.
Allow to cool.

No sulpher?
Heat to cherry red.
Then push handle on, past old whittnes mark
Allow to cool.

New handles.
Should come with a drilled hole to suit the file etc.
Many do not.

Measure the smallest width of the tang, minus 10% and drill and hole to the depth of the tang, minus 10%.
Do this 4 times, by dividing the tang into 4 lengtths.
This will give youy a steped hole into the handle.

Heat tang toi cherry red and force handle onto hot tang.
Allow to cool.





Or by a taper drill.
Drill handle.
Using 2 pack glue flood hole and ram handle on.

I've got a load that need handles too...think I'll order up some handles.

My plan was to score the tang and then use epoxy to put the handles on...logic being that the next time the handle needed to come off would be if it was busted anyway. Any reason this is a terrible idea?
