Got a 3 phase 1/4 Hp motor for my drill for 8 quid off eBay. I've found that when countersinking even the lowest speed is still too fast and chatters and I have a few inverters kicking around, so why not?

It's 400v only so it's either try and find the star point and reconfigure it for delta winding or use it as is and set the inverter up for 240volts at 29hz (ish). It will still run to 50hz (or more) but you get reduced torque above 29 hz, which I could probably live with. I've run it on the bench like this and it runs fine, and the bearings are nice and quiet so this may be the preferred option at the moment.

It's kinda crazy how these things are fifty-ish years old and still going. I was thinking this the other day when I looked at my drill.

Yeah - it runs nice and smooth, there's no dirt or dust anywhere! The single phase one that's currently fitted was full of sawdust when I took it apart.

I do like knowing about these firms, cheers. Had a read of that and another link, apparently there were 1000 Hoffmann bearings in each Merlin Spitfire engine, and a whopping 4000 in each Lancaster engine, making the works a prime target in WWII.

Think its 4 times as many due to lancs having 4 merlins on them.

Not really much of a skip find, but my local Aldi were doing these for £30 today. Down from £130!

Bought a couple of them mainly due to the fact that after sanding and grinding, everything on the shelves ends up manky.

I got one of the half sized ones last year for 12.50. Still trying to find a bit of spare wall to fix it to...

I went into the plant hire company to change a gas cylinder this afternoon & there was the bargain bucket. No I can't resist that, in there was a lazy tong riveter marked up at £39. I said to the girl on the counter "just looking at the bucket" "make us an offer" was the reply, I said "I wouldn't want to insult you" I was told go on so I said "a fiver" " shall I add it to your bill" she said. So now I'm the proud owner of a big riveter, don't know when I shall use it, but I wasn't going to turn it down at that price.

Pity I went in spot on closing time, else I'd have had a good root through, I know there was another riveter in there, one of the long handled ones, marked up at £25, but I only need one riveter & now I've got two, one small one & one big one. Sounds like a bit of mucky song, doesn't it.
