I've never used one before, know nothing about them apart from seeing other people using them
If you just want something to setup dimensions for things like partitioning, then anything.
If you want something highly accurate for doing things like setting up foundations, then it's going to cost you far more.
Off course, if you try doing the later with the former, you'll likely be the subject of tales from surveyors when they have to create independent reports for why things don't line up. (My neighbour is a highly regarded surveyor, and he has many tales about builders using £100 Screwfix specials to setup critical things like foundations. His favourite was the builder who used a cheap laser to setup a swimming pool surround, and ended up with a 4" height difference between the two ends )
