Difficult to tell from the pic, but judging by the number of blades on that cylinder it's entirely possible that was for use on a bowling green or golf course greens. If so, it could be worth a fair bit - some pedestrian greens mowers cost well over £1,000 when new......

Tyres are slightly cracked but will probably last for a long time yet, machine has barely ever been used and mostly for wood based on the dust inside the wheel housing and included selection of blades.

Is that not because it is designed for cutting wood?

Yes, worst case, I have two good engines... Clutch plates seem to be 26 or 28 quid each though. Which seems to explain why they are so naffing expensive whole.the bigger mower has a very simple iron on iron 'clutch' which seems much more cost effective.

Looks like a smaller version of mine - a "rip-all" (which is all I know about it).
Speeds are right on mine for wood and metal.

Mine is 4 speed tho - and takes a 40mm wide blade.

I had another tour of the carboot today. I have really been getting the bug for cleaning up and restoring old tools but I was a bit disappointed not to find myself a nice project. Think I have exhausted the goodies from the regular sellers now. Bargains seem to be harder to come by. The juicy stuff and the good prices seem to be from the one off sellers getting rid of their "junk" rather than the regular traders I see each week.

First off, a load of cheap ratchet spanners and a flexible half inch socket joint. I overpaid at a fiver for the lot. I was using one of my good ratchet spanners yesterday to dismantle a trampoline and found it really handy for shifting nuts quickly and easily. I think that's why I got a bit over enthusiastic for this lot. I suppose they will come in handy for any similar jobs at places away from the workshop. I won't cry if I lose these or leave them at someone's house. They might make a nice "lending" set. They need a good oil and a clean. I didn't realise how many duplicates there were. One is Kamasa Japan. The rest are Taiwan no name.

I picked up this number one Thor rawhide hammer and an MT3 taper drift from a retired couple who were clearing out a varied lot of household items. They looked like they were doing a car boot sale as a one off to make some room. One pound for the two items. I made myself a makeshift taper drift for my drill about a month ago so this proper one will replace it.

This looks like a very well made homebuilt tap wrench. It's a bit of a beast. I suspect I might end up with a sheared tap if I had to employ it fully. Not sure how well it would work in operation as I don't recall any manufactured ones designed this way like a parallel clamp. Looking at the cap head bolts I don't think it is very old. I also found a quality Gilbow punch. "Oil Quenched 37A GILBOW Sheffield England". I only ever knew of their metal shears. In addition, another universal joint socket thing, this one is by Draper. Two pound for the lot from a regular trader who doesn't seem to charge much.

Bi Metal Starrett 25mm hole saw and arbour. It is missing the pilot drill and the glorified grub screw which retains it but I bought a bigger Starrett one a fortnight ago and the bits from that may fit. I bought this and the 27mm Kennedy spanner to fill out my spanner collection for two quid. Screwfix sell the arbour alone for £10.99.

Finally, I found Mr House-clearance at the same pitch as last week. I took this rawhide hammer out of one of his many boxes of junk. I looked at it last week but didn't fancy it then for some reason. He still had it. He only asked for 20p! It is made to the same dimensions as the Thor but it seems to be a different brand. There appears to be a leather hide symbol stamped on it and a makers name. I thought it said LEIA but now I think it says BETA. Beta tools possibly? There is a "1" stamped on the other side and it is the same size a Thor number one hammer. One of the inserts is missing. I didn't complain.

got these at a steam fair - sykes pickavent hydraulic nut splitter + 2x snap on drill bits for £21

thought it was a good price - although does anyone know whats going on inside the bit where the bolt screws in , big one feels a little bit tight and i dont want to force it , anything i can do other than a drip of oil?

They're grease packed I think. They aren't loose, should feel a slight bit of resistance due to the very thick heavy grease.

Thor sell replacement inserts that may fit but to install them you need a custom tool (Which you have to make yourself on a lathe) and a hydraulic press to use the tool.

IIRC Thor did warn that unless it was seriously old then the head might crack in the attempt (they changed the head type from a soft malleable iron to a harder type less ameniable to being distorted

If I get some spare time and the inclination I might try fitting a copper insert to the hammer with the missing face. If it all goes wrong I will still have the other working hide hammer so nothing really lost.

I want to make a tool for a size A but they don't have the measurements for one of them, maybe No.1 was the smallest they did 23 years ago (See the date on it).

yes I've known the seller for many years. I gave him a call earlier made him a daft offer, Its now in my shed he even delivered it for me 60 miles Its a class lathe, forward and reverse clutch in the headstock new chucks and extra gears to cut all threads including modular pitches. a real chunky lead screw not the wimpy fine thread ones they put on the Chinese lathes.
I may have to sort the electrics out and run it from an inverter. From what I can tell it hasn't had much use.
