power supply....it does work better on a battery but not brilliant. Best I have it is running on a single 12 volt battery. (It's a 24 volt motor) that seemed to slow it down but not slow enough to weld. Just to position really.

A welding positioner would probably be easier to build with the motor driving a pulley attached to the table so you could put a fairly large pulley on the platen and a small on one the shaft to slow it down (A timing belt would probably work best) Is there a rating plate on it?

They scream welding positioner to me mate but you'd lose the wheel. Nice little worm motor and TIG away
That's along the lines I was thinking. Chop that bracket off for the wheel and use the castor upside down. Hadn't considered a welding positioner though. Might pop one to one side for that. Just to figure a use for the other one now.

Windscreen or electric window motor & gearbox, else the motor & gearbox from a satellite actuator might work. Just depends whether they have enough grunt, though I would think all of the above would be fine unless you're welding massively heavy stuff.

A friend popped through today to collect an old control panel, and brought this through for me. Some of you older chaps will probably recognise exactly what type of lantern this is straight away.
Should hopefully be giving it a test run sometime over the next few days.

Dug this out of its storage spot in the front shed today. I must be having a masochistic session.
I used to have this one hung from the workshop ceiling, but after clocking myself on it a few times, it got put in storage. I'm banking it won't be a week before I clock myself on it again.

aint scrap yards and waste full enginering works the best iv been geting bits and bobs from my local srappy since i was 15 years old so thats almost 17 years now some of the highlights include 45mm liner rails plus blocks 4.6 meter long pair 2.5 meter pair loads of smaller ones hydrolic power packs pumps rams valve blocks hoses all sorts of clamps so meany enginering parts its imposable to mention pnumataics the list goes on and on.
today i got 128kg of cap heads washers and nuts ranging from m20 to m3 most of witch were in unopened bags all for 35p per kg its amazing how wast full some big companys are

Oh, I know, it's a calcium carbide (miners?) lamp. The carbide reacts with the water to make acetylene which you ignite

That's the one. That cardboard tube behind it in the photo's has a kilo of calcium carbide in it, so plenty to play with.
Not sure what it's area of use would have been, but I'm guessing From Daniels post these style were possibly used on the railways.
