I admit to being a bit of a whisky 'snob' if that's the word to describe someone who only drinks single malts, the smokier and peatier the better - Lagavulin is my favourite and I drink so little I treat myself occasionally, but a bottle still lasts for quite a while.

Got these two at the scrapyard today. $10 the pair. I was overjoyed! Both were caked in grime beyond belief but the Wesco oil can has 99% of its paint and the original transfer! The little grease gun is going to my friend who is going to buy his first motorbike.

The hammer saga is ongoing. After being given the little Brades 8oz, I'm on the hunt to find the two remaining gaps, 1lb and 1.5lb. Today I scored the latter, a nice Brades example, not cheap at $15 but not overpriced. I need a few handles but I can always find them later. So far I have a Brades 8oz, Spear and Jackson 12oz, Brades 1.5lb, Bestmore 2lb and the oddball German cross pein Picard 2lb which I found in a skip.

I found some sheet metal tools but I did not buy them, I wasn't sure what it would be worth, seemed to be a kit of various shaped anvils for hammering on sheet metal for 15 euros. It might be a screaming deal, or it might be the kind of thing you find in big box stores for 10 euros more...

EDIT: Did some googling and it does seem like a steal now, maybe I need to go back in town and get it.... If it's still there...

Familirisation with good brands helps in these situations. So does a smartphone with internet access. Any literature on the tools/box can be pinged into Google and you're away.

I did this with a Bosch SDS drill, $50, should have bought it as I needed it for a rock breaking job the next week. However, the next month I got a job and they gave me an SDS drill free as it was 'broken' (collar ball bearing had come out, two minute job with circlip pliers to reseat it). I've never used it and it's sat at the back of my garage in its case, so I saved myself $50 as I didn't really need it after all!

You also have to consider the likelihood of ever using them. I've walked away from things I like, some of which I might have used at some point, as there has to be a cut-off point. Space & reality sometimes have to take precedence over a bargain.

Yep.. for many years I've collected stuff for one of my other hobbies, it will be useful when I have time to make that xyz when I've retired.. but technology has moved on and I can now do this stuff with modern equipment that would take a barn full of crap to do in hardware so its just never going to get used. Its got no real value so a very large percentage has already been weighed in for next to nothing.

If it's cheap enough for the eventuality that you will use it (and the cost of that service will easily outweigh it) then I think it's okay to hoover up 'bargains'. This is the biggest thing I've bought and never used properly, only to make a few handles purely because it was easier in this than in a vice, but it's never had serious work. $50 though. Would any of you lot have turned it down at that price, 25 quid?

Update on strimmer it's up and running still got a little leak but slow enough to have it running and cut the front lawn works very well after a sonic clean of the carb and new pipes it did not need the new pipes but as was apart thought I would renew them I have got a vid but it's to big to post
