The Old, dirty, blunt axe/
Well.
It went from this.
To this half way stage.
Shaft cleaned and scrubbed with meths, wire wool and a brass wire brush. Head cleaned with a wire brush in and angle grinder.
Finally this.
Shaft was steeped in Linseed oil, the head was waxed. The edge took a very good edge to it, with an oil stone.
No Makers mark, I could read. But a good head weight of 1 3/4lb. I Did refit the head with a full length wedge and for the first time, for me, a 2 pack shaft glue. I got from a Tree surgeon friend.
For those who were interested, on the original post I mentioned a Tent peg mallet head.

Metal end collars, old gas cylinder, trimmed to size and heated to red hot. The fitted to the turned ends of the head. The 2 rivets fitted.
Main shaft tuned down, Burmese teak, to 32mm, same size as head hole, the shaft had a 2mm run out so lower end was 34mm. Head warmed in an oven 60degc 30 mins. and tapped down. The secured with a full length tapered dowel, Oak. The head is not going anywhere.
The rope bindings on the head are for show only. I had some left over from doing the hand grip. The hand grip is soaked in wax to give a comfortable grip in a gloved hand. Or a grip what will not give you blisters if you us it with out.

One of my hammers had a rubbish shaft, totally round in section and half burnt through. My friend had borrowed it and said it was that bad he could hardly use it so he said he had a bit of hickory at home and he would make a shaft for the hammer for me.
He came in today with it and it feels great to use now.

Today I made a surprising discovery.
I pumped out a boat on the canal that had been partially sunk ,the engine starter battery is still fully charged but was under water for a week
I have no idea why or how ?

Picked up 800 more bricks for the garage extension pretty clean, Just saved them going in a skip same size as the ones my garage is made from and just round the corner, Had to do 2 runs as there was so many
