Ive got one of those old B & D drills, the 1/2 inch version, mine is gold, must be the posh version it was originally my fathers, dates from the early '70s I think. It's noisy, crude, but it drills holes! I have an idea it came from Headquarters & General supplies, mail order (I think that was the name) remember them anyone. They used to supply them with loads of useless attachments free that never worked, sanding discs, this sort of thing.

Today, being a good husband to Mrs TYA, I took the rubbish out to the bins.

It was a bit nippy, I may need to put socks on next time.

But sat on top of the grey bin was these.

A Rolsan 3 cell mag light copy. LED bulb. Yes it works, but needs new batteries.

Oh yes, a cricket ball.

Today I got the answer to my question.
"Who placed them on my bin?"

I was out clearing snow from the drive, so Mrs TYA can get out if she needs to.

As I was a guy I knew from my pup drinking days cam by with his family walking the dogs, he said;
" I left you a present on the pin the other week, did you get them?"

A mystery solved.

I had a genuine B & D jig saw attachment & also a hedge cutter one, they worked ok..ish. The hedge cutter & a drill, a mate borrowed. Big bang & a flash, & the lead was only 18" long then. He went a bit pale! There a lot of sort of tinplate accessories around then, not genuine, real rubbish.

The gold one dates from the 1960's. The one below is mine, 1/2"/ 13mm chuck. I got it as my Dad had one, until I dropped it from a ladder.



B&D did the kits off attachments right up to the late 1980's. I brought my Dad a kit from Argos back then to replace the one I dropped.

The attachments were not to bad, for light weight work. The hardest bit was removing the chuck, but it was doable. The blades supplied fitted the all of the B&D range.

I still have some rubber disc sanding disc, they are great for removing paint and filler from walls.

Re b and d drills , years ago I as out walking the dog , a neighbor was cutting his hedge, aha I thought he has one of these new hedge trimmers , as I walked past I aw he had a BD drill with about a 9 inch circular saw blade whizzing around no guard and inches from his fingers cutting his hedge, I backed way pretty quick , didn' want to distract him !!!!!!!!

Aye, I had the hedge trimmer one, and the sander. Can't for the life of me remember what happened to them. I still have [and use] the drill after all these years.

A friends teenage son who is in to tools ( says I groom him!!) wanted a pillar drill and was going to buy a cheapo make one. Pursueded him to hold off until I found one and FB came up trumps.

Fobco drill within 5 miles - £50! Just got to find him a motor and belt.

FB really does seem the place to find bargains.

He will get more mileage out of that than a cheapo one and for a drill you can groom me, But i would also expect a motor and a belt.

A good old pillar drill is in mind for when my extension is finished....and a lathe and a metal folder...the more room you have the more room you need.

I’m back, not technically today, actually it was yesterday, but I now have permanent electric in my workshop. 50 meters of 10mm armoured cable straight down the garden, I’ve got a dedicated 32amp socket for my welder, so I can finally crank it all the way up. No more dipping lights when I start up my machinery.

Despite having 10mm cable to the garage I sufferd for months with dimming lights and machinery, finally found the cause when we lost all power to the house, incoming supply had a faulty joint before entering the house, been fine since Western Power repaired it.

@indy4x Luckily my dimming lights have stopped now, when I was running everything off a fully unwound 13amp extension things struggled, the lights would go off all together when I started the mill in some speeds and a 2000watt 9 inch angle grinder did the same. Now hardly a blip, even when the heater is on as well.

My electrician has warned me that the incoming supply is only 60amp though and it is expensive to get the electric board out to replace the old fuse if I blow it. Just got to tell my mum not to cook while I’m welding.

If it blows they will fix it for free, don’t know why he’s told you that. It’s expensive to get the cable replaced, unless it’s damaged then that’s free too

My cable fix was free, I was pretty sure when it broke that the outside joint on the cable had blown.

Really managed to wind up the wife while waiting for them to pinpoint the break, we have an imprinted concrete drive and parking area, told her and Western Power engineer joined in that we would have to dig it all up
