Little bit unfair of me to single out Dobbsic. I’m not here to upset anyone.

But this is highly irresponsible advice if you are serious about this

The simple fact Parm is that reality differs greatly from the perfect option. Council dumpits have containers marked for asbestos, with no mention of type. Asbestos related stuff gets ripped out/binned daily with little to no precaution, and authorities only tend to care when it's either a clearcut case, a large detrimental effect else, more commonly, just when they can be arsed to do anything.

I used to see asbestos garages stuck on piles of rubbish and wood years ago and then they would get burned....crazy times

A friend of mine worked on the railways and he remembers having "snowball" fights with asbestos that was being carried in the goods wagons.

The council recycling centre in Leamington spa used to have a skip with doors that were never closed, into which people were encouraged to throw unwrapped asbestos. Woe betide anyone who tried taking it there in a van, but a family car or camper was fine. This was about 5 years ago, no idea if they still have it.

My dad used to work in a wire rope factory. They used to treat the steel wire before twisting by drawing it through a die followed by it being pulled through a tank of molten lead. To keep the heat in the lead, bags of asbestos dust was sprinkled on top. My dad got a bottle of milk a day to "protect" him from the lead.

You can't burn asbestos can you? I thought that was the whole point.

My husband was diagnosed with suffering from asbestosis about 15 years ago. In the 60’s, he used to work with a demolition company, dismantling stuff lined in asbestos.

No respirators, no proper protective clothing of any kind. He’s now in and out of hospital with chest infections, etc. And getting worse.

Horrible stuff, asbestos.

So i was looking for ideas for an unusual gear shift lever for my hot rod, I saw this set on US Ebay... so they are now mine, winging their way to me as we speak.

One will become my gear shifter, another maybe the hand brake lever, not sure about the others, may keep them for when I need a couple installed in me.

Been away for a few days, that thing called "Work"

But the site had a pond.
I had a magnet on a string.
I had time, I had access to a floaty almost boaty thing.

27" Long cold chisel, badly rusted and has seen a hard life. But it will rise again.

It has risen.

Sadly not as a chisel, the metal was to badly gone.
But it has a use. It is now designed to help up the "Man Hole" covers in mine and a neighbours garden. We are having them relined with a plastic liner.
The contractor told us, " If the covers do not come up easy, there will be a charge"
So we made sure they lift up.

The Hammer end, the burs removed, squared off and a taper put on it.



The chisel end was re shaped, reground, hardened and tempered.
This end was tempered to blue. The hammer end to dark straw.



Finished and rubbed down in linseed oil and bees wax.

He receives the industrial injuries thing, but if course, what the government gives with one hand, they take away with the other. Being so long ago, all the companies he worked for are long gone, so no civil suit for him.

I know this is off topic, but I have to just say, that our local health service have been absolute stars. Not only have they gone above and beyond for the hubby, but with me being his carer, they always check that I’m ok too.

sorry for this comment but ive seen many a thread on what is this

if you dont ask you dont know

i think many of us would have just ripped it off and binned it without realising what it really was

no point in blaming parm for maybe the best advice they have on the subject

i will say this i hadnt realised that stuff being a door seal would be asbestoes

Mrs Vark heard my plaintiff woes of one of my saws going "Missing" after a ex friend borrowed it.

Nice Mr Postie has just left, he left me this.

I am even more happy, another project, all be it small to restore.

Time on my hands today.

Blade cleaned with vegetable acid, was a worth a try. But not something I would try again.



Handled cleaned and drying out as I set and sharpened the teeth. You can see the flash glinting of the fresh metal on the teeth.



The original saw and the new replacement.

The original was suddenly found at the friends house. Odd, as he suddenly wanted help.
