A new proper sexy new cb radio in place of my old steam powered affair .



Fitted it above the dash in one of the overhead cubbyholes using the Scania approved DIN plate, and used the adjacent cubbyhole to make a bracket for the external speaker, a holder for the power mike, and somewhere for my safety/sun glasses.

The next task is to fit and wire in a PA speaker under the front grille. Nothing’s quite so much fun as either telling errant motorists to get a move on via a loudspeaker, or driving into the yard with seriously loud music blaring out, usually a cd of massed pipe bands playing Scotland the Brave in deference to our leader, Scottish by birth but a Yorkshireman by God’s Grace .

And the opening few seconds of drumrolls while the pipers get up a head of steam never fails to make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. Nothing beats a massed pipe band in my book .

The sound system in this truck is magnificent as is, but when I play music from my iPad through the auxiliary port on the radio, it’s terrifyingly loud , every panel on the cab vibrates and it comes close to making my ears bleed . Daft I know, but so what .

A few years back I was running construction gear into the centre of Cambridge, leaving the M11 at junction12, which brings you to a hard right turn at the traffic lights by the awesome Church of Our Lady, just up from the Scott Polar Research Institute buildings. That turn is thin enough with a standard artic, never mind a 20+metre lowloader rig, but I used to delight in making a leisurely turn, both windows down and massed bagpipes blaring out at full volume . That made the dozy cyclists wake their ideas up .

Somehow this followed me home. I already have the Fobco so I don’t know why I acquired it... but $60 seemed well cheap for a nice old drill

From fleabay, and I had initially thought I might have paid too much. Ten rusty measuring callipers of dubious quality. They arrived yesterday, and last night I soaked them for anywhere from 20 to 45 minutes in my first ever citric acid ‘bath’.

To my surprise, it worked. I now have seven Moore & Wright, callipers, one Medco, and two unknown. Fortunately, one of unknown’s ‘spring’ was cracked, and the other heavily rusted, so no real loss, as the broken one, has supplied spare parts on two of my existing ones, and repair one in the collection.

I still need to do a bit more cleaning and polishing, but now have a choice to upgrade what I use in my leather workshop, and to furnish both little workshops.

Very handy are old style measuring things, and two of them will make great circle scribes.

You can do a mean steam train chuffing out or into the station at differing speeds including blowing the whistle if it is loud enough .

And I’ve just given the Yanks on gate guard at Lakenheath a taste of high octane bagpipes! Every head swivelled to my direction as I drove through the gates, full volume music and all hi-viz beacons and flashers lit up. This showing off is getting to be a habit..

Went to Lidl this morning and bought a bunch of stuff
From left to right
A magnetic dish ,I need to don't lose bolts and other things
A flashlight torch ,I need because it's always handy have one and I didn't have one before
Antimicrobial gel cleaner (I often work on very dirt stuff ,as black well pumps and company)
Combination spanners set from 6 to 32mm , bought that just because I don't use them often and they costs 25 euros that is almost the price of a Beta art.42 32mm so ...
Brake cleaner ,to clean and degrease metal surfaces as engine blocks etc
Rust remover , bought just to try if it really works
Silicon spray lubricant ,I found that works very well to protect an make plastic shine
A little mirror and a little magnet both on an extendable rod

Not train ones but had a set of air horns on a baggy old ford escort, used to frighten the life out of people, there was an ever so slight delay from pressing the horn to it going off while the 12v compressor got enough air up

When I fitted air horns to a Morris Minor years ago, I left the old horn still connected. This meant due to the delay you could give a quick toot, or you held the button down for the full monty. This has just reminded me, a mate went one better, he had a set that played Colonel Bogie, I think they are illegal now.
