I said "before" just because I know that you are UK based and when you picked up all the lathes in UK you have to go over the border and search other lathes

Do you pick up only lathes or also milling machines and mill drills?

Lathes. Milling machine. Drills. Saws. Anything old .vintage. mainly British but have a few other bits from different parts of the world. Cant stand modern equipment although it has its place...just not in my workshop. It's the history I find interesting. If I can save it then I am happy.

How do you search them?
I use to repair power tools and I order the parts from a friend of mine that has an electromechanic shop he repair tools also and windings on big three phase motor (over 10Hp because smaller are not worth to repair)
Sometimes he give me tools that he didn't repair
But mostly are from 90's and first 2000

I have eyes everywhere. I know lots of people. Also I look for machine shops that are closing down. I always look in the background on machine sales. You will be surprised what you can find .

I also know a lot of guys in the engineering industry. And they have to by law update there machinery to new health and safety standards. Bad for then. But good for me because I get offered the old stuff.

I spend a good couple of hours every day searching for items.
Sometimes it can take a good year to find a specific item. But if your will to hunt then you will find.
Like now....I am currently searching for the original fixed steady for the monarch lathe. I dont care how long it takes.

I often find stuff cheap. Unfortunately not always in the position to get it.
My Manchester 6 power hacksaw was working in a workshop close to my location. Health and safety paid them a visit and booked the saw unsafe to use because the blade didn't have a cover.
I gave £75 for the saw.

Here is way different there are people who sell garbage for the double of the value of the new product
For this reason I am thinking to search at the scrapyard but is something like 50km away from where I live
There are closer scrapyards but they don't treat metals scraps they are just car cemetery

Thanks, I’ve been looking for the last couple of yrs on and off, in no hurry. Much rather find one I really liked at the price I was prepared to pay. Nearly bought one in Belgium last month but the seller sold it from under me.
This was 1500quid less, and only 2hrs away.
