Ton up with my R-Tech 250-1 mig,

This morning I installed a new reel of wire on my 250-1 mig, and according to my records this is the 67th 15kg roll or 1000kg/1 ton of 0.8mm A18 wire that I have installed into my welder since I purchased it a little over 2 years ago or about one reel consumed every 8-10 working days.

My 250-1 has also pushed 75kg of 1.0mm A.18, about 10kg O.6mm A18 and a single 15kg reel of 316 stainless steel during this period making about 1100kgs of wire in total

Is your R Tech an inverter type?.

Yes, it is an inverter set, and in my opinion it is much better than any single phase transform Mig welder I have used.

Thanks for that Gareth0123. I've been toying with the Idea of a new mig for awhile now as the damp is starting to affect the old Migatronic more and more.

This morning the 69th reel of 15kg X 0.8 A18 wire was installed on to my R-Tech 250-1 inverter mig welder and probably on Friday or more likely Saturday I will be installing the 70th reel of wire........... I have a double production stock run tomorrow, Thursday and Friday so that I am ready for the new year.

If it all goes to plan I can start work on the 2017 Tadpole Sail Trike project on Saturday Morning which means I'll be using all 3 of my R-Tech Machines: Mig, Plasma & Tig.

The 2 contract welder/fabricators who worked directly for me at Claas/Caterpillar were each easily capable of laying down 10kg of wire a day on average and did so 5 days a week albeit with 3 phase (I think they were 600 amp) Kempi machines.

Thats a fair bit of wire to get through on a daily basis,
When i was a full time welder/fabricator at a handful of times i would get through up to 15kg of 1mm wire in a day but it was generally about 15kg in a week.

Thats a fair bit of wire to get through on a daily basis,

1.5kg to 1.875kg of wire in average working day is not that great an amount.
When I get going on a regular standard production job that I do, I lay down 225g of wire in less than 20 minutes which I do 6 off consecutively so 6 X 225g =1350g with only a few seconds to position between runs.
I have another regular job which I've yet to weigh........ and I really need to do this soon because weight really is a very important, almost critical factor on this particular product where I lay down 4 X 350mm welds: 1400mm of weld in total. So I am considering Tig welding this job utilising a "topped-up" with filler as required flowing molten pool weld to help keep the weight down.

What sort of thickness are you welding?
Could you not MIG root and stick fill and cap, or for the hell of it 6013 root and 7018 fill and cap?
Does it really need to be MIG?

TBH, TIG would be both a waste of time, literally, and an increased expense unnecessary...

My standard production runs are on 8 mm & 10mm MS flat, and 10 Ø and 16 Ø MS bar.
The weld on the new product is the addition of a 12Ø MS bar 350mm long welding to the edge of 10 X 30 MS flat on both sides, and although this is actually a stiffener and 3 X 50mm long stiches on each side would provide more than adequate strength I need the joint sealed both for aesthetics and to prevent corrosion beginning between the two pieces.

Today I installed the 80th reel of 0.8mm X 15kg A18 wire onto my R-tech 250-1 welder........... that along with the 0.6, 1.0 and stainless I have push through this machine is in excess of 1200kg or 1.2 tons of wire.

About half an hour ago I installed the 90th reel of 0.8mm X 15kg A18 wire onto my R-tech 250-1 welder. That's 1350kg of 0.8mm wire through this machine along with about another 200kg of 0.6mm and 1.0mm and some stainless to give a total of over 1500kg.

I lay down an approx. average of 1.5kg of 0.8mm wire per working day or a 15kg reel every fortnight. Mostly making Pallet dismantling bars and some one off repairs and bespoke jobs coming through the door.

Just about everything else I make these days including the bicycle, trike and quad frames, pony carts, husky rigs and gardening equipment is now virtually all Tig welded.

I've been toying with the Idea of a new mig for awhile now as the damp is starting to affect the old Migatronic more and more.

My 26 year old Sureweld MIG sat in a damp hay shed for a few years. She played up with the wire feed, it was running really badly despite me stripping the WF unit and motor down. She is now in a dry shed she has dried out and is back working like a new machine again. Tho she is now pretty scabby with rust and peeled powder coat due to her long spell in the damp. Must strip bodywork off and attack with a wire wheel and fresh paint. Keep her going another 26 years. Ceartinly will not be replacing her as she is a SUPERB machine. Wild weld anything except scaled rust, even painted body panel as long as you can strike the arc. Never saw another machine which needs so little prep.
